"The Pearl" by John Steinbeck
Rather unexpectedly, I almost immediately recognized the opening passages of the book. Surprising for 50+ years since I read it. Steinbeck's ability to create - not just a scene, but an atmosphere - was striking to me then, and remains so.

This was my #firstread for August! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This series is a completely unique Dark Academia story. Very well written. I am not good with fantasy sometimes because of their depth so I had to focus more while reading this series but it was a smooth transition from book 1 to book 2. Book 3 next month.
