AI deciphers fish grunts, knocks and growls to identify eight species University of Victoria (UVic) biologists have discovered that even closely related fish species make unique and distinctive sounds and determined that it's possible to differentiate between the sounds of different species. The discovery opens the door to identifying fish based on sound alone.

🐠🀯 Fish have unique voices! UVic biologists found each species β€œtalks” differently, letting us ID them by sound alone. An ocean of secrets revealed! ✨ #FishSounds

New Underwater Tool Lets Ecologists ID Fish From Their Sounds–46 Species So Far (LISTEN to 5 of Them) Underwater coral reefs are filled with thumps, pops, and snaps from shrimp and fish, and ecologists often use underwater microphones to monitor the health of marine environments. But until now, ecologists have largely been unable to interpret these sounds because reefs are crowded with hundreds of different speciesβ€”very few of which have had sounds accurately […] The post New Underwater Tool Lets Ecologists ID Fish From Their Sounds–46 Species So Far (LISTEN to 5 of Them) appeared first on Good News Network.

Three Minute Thesis competition: This all sounds fishy
Three Minute Thesis competition: This all sounds fishy YouTube video by Xavier Mouy

This all sounds fishy!

A 3-min summary of my PhD research. This video is several years old and my PhD is now finished but I am continuing this research with UVic, NOAA Fisheries and WHOI. #fishsounds #bioacoustics πŸ§ͺπŸŸπŸ”‰

The Codcast This four episode podcast series explores the discovery of a sound. It is a faint but distinct sound produced by a fish, the Arctic cod. Only recently have scientists realized how important sound is in the lives of fishes. The Arctic cod was never thought of as a sound producing, or soniferous species, until researchers from the Juanes Lab put a recording device in an Arctic cod tank. The sound they heard was clearly biological, produced by the fish in the tank, and is now known as a 'grunt'. This one discovery launched a multi-year investigation into the sound producing ability of this species. Why do they produce sound? How do they produce sound? When do they produce sound? Is noise pollution interfering with their sound production in the wild? These are the questions this series will dive into, getting accounts from the investigating scientific team, bioacousticians, and fish sound experts. This series also explores noise pollution in the ocean more broadly, and how it is affecting not just fish, but all sound producing marine species.

Did you know that Arctic cod make sound? Listen to the CodCast, a podcast telling the story of the research conducted by my friends at the University of Victoria trying to unravel the sounds of the Arctic cod. πŸ§ͺπŸŸπŸ”‰ #fishsounds
