With less than 5 years to deliver on the #Fitfor55 goals, all eyes are on #EUNECPs - especially to fill the concerning gaps undermining their credibility and full implementation.
Today the European Commission published its assessment of the final #EUNECPs and we reacted ⤵️
A5.2 Woody biomass demand will continue to grow according to most scenarios associated with EU’s 2040 climate targets, and under #Fitfor55 targets.
🚨There is a risk of undermining forest ecosystems and their long-term ability to sequester carbon.

A4.3 The Renewable Energy Directive still treats forest biomass as a renewable source, despite strengthened sustainability criteria, and the pressure from #Fitfor55 targets can incentivise unsustainable logging, effectively prioritising short-term energy goals over long-term forest health.
