I'd brought four copies of Flaubert's novel to the hospital: the French original, the English translation, and two Chinese translations.
Translation is an extremely challenging task, and a good translation is even more challenging.

I just realized that Madame Bovary is basically an opera without the singing.

Thank you to everyone. This has been one of my favourite group reads.
Emma chases rapture relentlessly, while Charles, though far from dashing, loves her doggedly and irrationally, and Lheureux ruins them both. Hard to forgive the couple for so completely failing their daughter. I forgot how utterly bleak and galling the end is. :( #Flauberttogether
It would only be fair if Madame Bovary’s daughter Berthe became a writer. Poor kid. #Flauberttogether
1. "She was corrupting him from beyond the grave." hahaha
2. Indictment against the newspaper's power- Homais ruins lives and controls the village with his invented anecdotes.

Happy accident to read these simultaneously & ponder the Traditional Ideal Woman/wife vis-a-vis Flora from The Soul of Kindness (1964) by Elizabeth Taylor née Coles & Emma from #MadameBovary (1856) by Gustav Flaubert. Both attack this ideal subtly & w/humor.

"The priests, the cantors and the two choirboys recited the De profundis; and their voices carried over the fields, rising and falling in waves. ... Charles felt himself overcome...these cloying odors of wax and cassocks."

Nothing like extending lunch invitations and getting his kids examined while his poisoned neighbor is dying. Homais at his finest.

Il souffla bien fort ce jour-là,

Une convulsion la rabattit sur le matelas. Tous s'approchèrent. Elle n'existait plus.

Madame BOVARY III,8
„Elle en avait fini, songeait-elle, avec toutes les trahisons, les bassesses et les innombrables convoitises qui la torturaient. Elle ne haïssait personne, maintenant; une confusion de crépuscule s'abattait en sa pensée, et de tous les bruits de la terre
