nice hack i've done twice this year...drop by CSHL for a day (Neurofly), listen bunch of talks and chat up posters, see ~20 people (inc 2 collaborators IRL for 1st time, and our former star grad student Piero Sanfilippo), share updates on #FlyBase with community and urge donations, and back home! 🪰
#FlyBase release FB2025_04 is live. There's a couple of major changes in this release.

FlyBase Update – October 2025 The termination of the NIH/NHGRI FlyBase grant has placed the long-term sustainability of FlyBase at risk. However, thanks to the generous support of several key individuals and institutions, we are pleased to announce that FlyBase will remain operational through the coming year. We extend our deepest gratitude to Yukiko Yamashita, Cassandra Extavour, Hugo Bellen, Thom Kaufman, the Genetics Society of America / Drosophila Board, the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center, an anonymous donor and the Wellcome Trust. Shocking news: the whole @flybase.bsky.social team at @harvard.edu will be laid off on October 12! Devastating for #DrosophilaResearch community, as #FlyBase has been a crucial database for genetic and genomic information on fruit flies. The impact of this loss will be significant!

#Flybase. This is foundational in genomics. I was a postdoc at #Jax on the mouse genome tools and saw them all coming along at the same time in the early days.
This is generational damage to our science progress.

Maybe a better question is what happened to recent 501(c)3-charitable donations to the “ #Harvard #FlyBase Sustainment Fund.”
I kicked in a kiloclam back in April, as I have for several years running. Did FlyBase spend my money as I intended?
