A screenshot of an excerpt from an email newsletter that reads: "Sheffield's Festival of Debate is about to start, so we asked five people across the local climate movement for their recommendations Jenny Carpenter from Global Justice Sheffield: There are two outstanding FoD events that I wouldn't miss for world: they are Kate Raworth on Doughnut Economics (25 April) and Jason Hickel on Degrowth (29 April) - wonderful opportunities to discover how to live joyfully within boundaries in the face of climate change. Steph Mullen from Kids Plant Trees: I'm drawn to two events in particular - Exploring Frontiers: A Rights of Nature Just Transition (13 May) and Joycelyn Longdon: Nature Connection (21 May) - creative explorations of our connection with nature and each other, and how these connections can help us shape a better future. Gareth Roberts from Regather: I missed the premiere, so I'm looking forward to watching Social Enterprising the Transitions Ahead (28 May), which is a powerful documentary capturing how social enterprise in Sheffield is helping to navigate – and lead – the transitions we all face. Veronica Broomes from the Sheffield Sustainability Network: With the growing trend of people being economically active beyond 'retirement age', influenced either by personal choice or circumstance, 'Sharing stories for more inclusive aging' (14 May) caught my eye. Also 'Rebirth of Mother Earth' (30 May), a local initiative by artists with global insights drawn from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. John Grant from XR Scientists: No recommendation from John, but a plea - "I can’t wait to hear some discussions/presentations/issues which allow me to have active hope for the future, I’m fed up with being scared, depressed and angry.”
Ahead of the start of Festival of Debate 2025 next week, South Yorkshire Climate Alliance asked five people across the local climate movement what they're looking forward to at this year's festival.
