PSG and Inter Milan set for Champions League final showdown Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan will lock horns in Saturday’s Champions League final with the French side hoping to win European club football’s biggest prize for the first time and the Italians eyeing their fourth title. The match, which kicks off at Bayern Munich’s 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena at 9:00pm (1900 GMT), pits an experienced Inter against a PSG team appearing in their second final since the transformative Qatari takeover of the club in 2011. Whoever wins will succeed Real Madrid as champions, and excitement is notably at fever pitch back in Paris, where around 40,000 people will watch on giant screens at PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium and a huge police presence is planned around the city. The climax to the European season has thrown up a mouthwatering clash of opposing styles and ideas of how to build a team, a contest between one of the continent’s old guard and one of the state-owned modern superclubs. Despite enormous spending, PSG have never won the Champions League before, coming closest when they got to the final in 2020. That was during the pandemic, when they lost to Bayern behind closed doors in Lisbon, despite the presence of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar up front. The addition of Lionel Messi a year later did not help them in their quest to claim the trophy, and their brilliant run to Munich has come in the season after Mbappe followed the South American superstar duo out of the exit door. “There have been great times, difficult times, but we have a glorious opportunity to do something remarkable and historic for this club,” captain Marquinhos said on Friday. Under Spanish coach Luis Enrique, an exciting young Paris side has taken Europe by storm in recent months, with a comeback win in January against 2023 champions Manchester City proving the catalyst. Since then PSG have knocked out three more Premier League sides — Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal — en route to the final, and have completed a French league and cup double. Ousmane Dembele has been their star player with 33 goals, ably assisted by fellow forwards Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Others like Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Inter, and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have also been superb. “My biggest motivation is to make history for Paris and give the city and club something to celebrate,” said Luis Enrique, who is looking to win his second Champions League title, 10 years after leading Barcelona to glory. Victory for PSG would make them just the second French winners of the competition — Marseille’s 1993 triumph also came in Munich, at the old Olympic Stadium, and against Inter’s city rivals AC Milan. Inter were the last Italian winners, when Jose Mourinho’s side defeated Bayern in Madrid in 2010. They also won it twice in successive years in the 1960s. Coach Simone Inzaghi was already in charge when the Nerazzurri got to the final two years ago and lost narrowly to City. As many as eight of the team that started that night in Istanbul could do so again here, and an experienced line-up should feature three players aged 36 or over. Inzaghi’s side beat Bayern in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Barcelona in an epic tie in the last four. Captained by star Argentinian forward Lautaro Martinez, they will set up in a 3-5-2 formation that contrasts sharply with the 4-3-3 of PSG. “Last time against Manchester City we produced a top-class performance but didn’t win, so this time we hope to be a bit more switched on,” said midfielder Nicolo Barella, recalling the 2023 final. “These matches come down to fine margins, but we will try to bring home the trophy, that is the dream for all of us. “After a season like this one I think we deserve to win this final,” added Barella, whose side missed out to Napoli for the Serie A title on the last day of the campaign. It is, remarkably, the first ever competitive encounter between the teams. While fans flooded into the German city on Friday, back in Paris fanzones have been set up at three locations beyond PSG’s stadium. Police will deploy more than 5,000 officers in the city and its suburbs during the final after violence erupted following PSG’s last-four victory against Arsenal. In Milan, meanwhile, tens of thousands will also watch the game at Inter’s San Siro stadium. The post PSG and Inter Milan set for Champions League final showdown appeared first on The Namibian.

The key battles in the Champions League final Paris Saint-Germain are the favourites to win their first UEFA Champions League title when the French club take on Inter Milan in Saturday’s final. Here AFP Sport looks at the battles which could define the game at the Allianz Arena in Munich: The final will be a particularly special occasion for Hakimi, PSG’s Moroccan right-back who won the Serie A title with Inter in 2021. Hakimi is possibly the best full-back in the world, certainly when it comes to attacking, and he has scored or set up 22 goals this season. But could the space he leaves in behind on his frequent forays forward be exploited by Dimarco, Inter’s rampaging left wing-back who has four goals and 11 assists across Serie A and the Champions League? Dimarco has a key role to play in Inter’s 3-5-2 formation, in which his attacking contribution is vital. However, he had a torrid time defensively up against Lamine Yamal in the semi-finals, certainly in the first leg in Barcelona. Dumfries does the same job on the right as Dimarco on the left for Inter, with the Dutchman a marauding wing-back who offers so much to his side going forward — he has scored 11 goals this season, including two in the first leg against Barcelona. But Dumfries will also be charged with the task of muzzling Kvaratskhelia, the Georgian left-winger who joined PSG in January from Napoli having contributed to Antonio Conte’s side denying Inter the Serie A title. Kvaratskhelia is a familiar opponent for Inter — he came up against them six times while at Napoli, but won just one of those games and has never scored past the Nerazzurri defence. The two captains will go head to head in a South American confrontation between PSG’s Brazilian centre-back and Inter’s Argentinian forward. At 31, Marquinhos is the oldest player in the PSG team and has been at the club since 2013, when he joined from Roma as a teenager. Marquinhos has therefore appeared in so many painful defeats for PSG in the Champions League over the last decade, and played in the 2020 final loss to Bayern Munich. His experience is precious for a young side, while the 27-year-old Martinez is the main goal threat for Inter having netted 22 goals this season, including nine in Europe. The duo have played against each other four times at international level, including in the 2021 Copa America final, when Martinez partnered Lionel Messi up front for Argentina in their 1-0 victory over Marquinhos and Brazil at the Maracana. Dembele is the leader of the PSG attack, the France winger having been transformed this season by Luis Enrique into a lethal finisher with 33 goals in all competitions. If he can find the net and help PSG to victory, he may well become the favourite for this year’s Ballon d’Or. That would be remarkable for a player who in the French national team is principally there to serve Kylian Mbappe, as he was last season at PSG. In Inter’s attack, Dembele’s fellow France international Thuram is the foil for Martinez. With 18 goals in all competitions, this has been his most prolific campaign to date. Signed by Inter after the 2023 final, now he has the chance to go one further than father Lilian, a Champions League runner-up with Juventus in 2003. PSG’s midfield three sees Portuguese pocket dynamos Vitinha and Joao Neves team up with Fabian Ruiz, the elegant Spaniard whose tireless work rate can almost go unnoticed. Vitinha makes the team tick and is the designated penalty taker. The energetic Neves, signed last summer from Benfica, starts the press and is also surprisingly useful in the air. Ruiz, scorer of a precious goal in the semi-final second leg against Arsenal, is the most experienced of the three. The star in the middle for Inter is Nicolo Barella, who is joined by Turkish international Hakan Calhanoglu, one of the best set-piece takers in world football. Completing the trio is Henrikh Mkhitaryan, a veteran at 36 who made his Champions League debut for Shakhtar Donetsk 15 years ago. He may struggle to last 90 minutes. Wily Inter aim to stop PSG juggernaut in Champions League final Favourites Paris Saint-Germain have their sights fixed on finally winning the Champions League trophy but a rugged and battle-hardened Inter Milan side stand in their way in Saturday’s final in Munich. The climax to the European season has thrown up a mouthwatering clash of opposing styles and ideas of how to build a team. It is a contest between one of the continent’s old guard and one of the state-owned modern superclubs. Despite enormous spending, PSG have never won the most glamorous prize in European club football and this is just their second final since the transformative Qatari takeover of the team from the French capital in 2011. In 2020, during the pandemic, they lost the final to Bayern Munich behind closed doors in Lisbon, despite the presence of Kylian Mbappe and Neymar up front. Adding an ageing and unmotivated Lionel Messi to that front line took them further away from European glory than at any point in the last decade and their thrilling run to Munich has come in the season after Mbappe followed the South American superstar duo out of the exit door. Mbappe thought a move to last year’s Champions League winners Real Madrid would improve his chances of getting his hands on the trophy. Instead Luis Enrique’s thrilling young Paris side — average age under 24 — has taken Europe by storm. When they last came to Munich in November and lost 1-0 to Bayern, they were in danger of being knocked out during the league phase in the first season since the competition’s new format was introduced. A brilliant comeback win in January against 2023 champions Manchester City was the catalyst for a superb run as PSG eliminated three more Premier League sides — Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal — en route to the final. ‘Make history’ Ousmane Dembele has been the standout with 33 goals in all competitions, ably assisted by fellow forwards Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola and January signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Others like Achraf Hakimi, formerly of Inter and perhaps the world’s best full-back, and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma have also been superb for the French league and cup double winners. “We know what kind of football we want to play and now we just need to go out and do it to our full potential,” said their Spanish coach, who is looking to win his second Champions League title, a decade after leading Messi’s Barcelona to glory in Berlin. “It is always very difficult to get to the final of the Champions League. All players and coaches dream of playing in it but most don’t get the chance. “We want to be the first ones in Paris to win the Champions League and make history.” That, remarkably, would make them just the second French club to win the competition — if they are looking for an omen then Marseille’s 1993 triumph also came in Munich, across the city at the old Olympic Stadium, and against Inter’s city rivals AC Milan. Italian experience Inter, meanwhile, are bidding to win a fourth European Cup to add to back-to-back triumphs under Helenio Herrera in the 1960s, and the 2010 victory against Bayern in Madrid, under Jose Mourinho. Coach Simone Inzaghi was already in charge when the Nerazzurri got to the final two years ago and lost narrowly to City. As many as eight of the team that started that night in Istanbul could do so again here, where Inter have also already played this season. Inzaghi’s side beat Bayern in the quarter-finals before getting the better of Barcelona in the last four in one of the all-time great Champions League ties, especially the epic second leg in the rain at San Siro. “To really make history we have to win on Saturday,” said Inzaghi, whose likely starting line-up will feature three players aged 36 or over. Inter will set up in a 3-5-2 formation that contrasts sharply with the 4-3-3 of PSG, and it will be fascinating to see how they respond to losing out to Napoli for the Serie A title on the last day of the season. “We know that it will be difficult, we know that we’re facing a super team just like Barcelona and Bayern Munich but they will come up against a team which has the same goal as PSG. All we can do is try put in a great performance in the final,” he added. The post Wily Inter aim to stop PSG juggernaut in Champions League final appeared first on The Namibian.

Chiefs, Pirates set up dream South African Cup final Rare Orlando Pirates starter Kabelo Dlamini and Kaizer Chiefs substitute Ashley du Preez on Sunday scored their first South African FA Cup goals this season to secure their sides’ places in the final. Dlamini struck midway through the first half to give title-holders Pirates a 1-0 semi-finals victory over Marumo Gallants in Soweto. Later, Du Preez scored from close range on 89 minutes as Chiefs came from behind to pip Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in Pretoria. Teboho Mokoena had broken the deadlock before Wandile Duba equalised. It will be a dream climax to the cup with the most popular clubs in South Africa certain to attract a sell-out 60,000 crowd to Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on May 10. Chiefs pipped Pirates on penalties when they last met in an FA Cup final, 19 years ago, also in the Indian Ocean port city. Success was special for Chiefs as they not only kept alive hopes of winning a first trophy since 2015, but also qualified for the 2025-2026 CAF Confederation Cup. “I knew Sundowns would tire,” said Tunisia-born Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi, referring to their opponents having played a CAF Champions League quarter-final in Tunis five days ago. “We had to win after three defeats by Sundowns in league and knockout matches this season. Our supporters have been suffering for too long.” Chiefs have won a record 53 domestic competitions since being formed in 1970, but last triumphed when they topped the 2014-2015 championship table. Sundowns Portuguese coach Miguel Cardoso, who has taken the club to the CAF Champions League semi-finals, said they were the authors of their own downfall against Chiefs. “We made an early second-half mistake that brought alive a team that was dead. However, we blame no individual. We win as a team and we lose as a team.” Duba intercepted a careless pass by Argentinian Lucas Suarez and fired past Ronwen Williams for a 57th-minute leveller. Mokoena netted direct from a free-kick in first-half added time. In the other semi, Pirates’ Dlamini completed a slick four-pass move by steering the ball into the corner of the net past Zimbabwe goalkeeper Washington Arubi on 22 minutes. “I call Kabelo the ‘invisible man’. Supporters hardly notice him, but he does tremendous work in midfield,” said Pirates coach Jose Riveiro. The Spaniard is chasing a third straight FA Cup title and a sixth triumph in a South African knockout competition in his third season with the Buccaneers.
