The ocean is our greatest climate ally. It has absorbed 90% of excess heat but this buffering comes at a cost. The ocean is warming, acidifying and losing precious habitats. By protecting at least 30% of the ocean by 2030, we can:
- Safeguard the world's largest carbon sink.
- Preserve vital 'blue carbon' habitats.
- Recover depleted fisheries and ecosystems.
- Build coastal resilience.
Ocean action is climate action.
To meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, we must tackle ocean and climate challenges together - protecting and restoring ocean biodiversity as part of global climate action.
