****Update on Claus**** Last Friday, Claus went in for what we believed would be a routine cruciate ligament repair. Unfortunately, we were unaware of the true extent of the damage to his poor knee. Once the surgeons opened his leg, they discovered that his knee was surrounded by infected fluid and that there was a severe bone infection, which had eaten away at the knee joint and left a hole. We knew Claus hadn’t been using the leg for some time due to significant muscle wastage, but the extent of the damage came as a shock to us all. The level of infection and joint destruction meant that repair was impossible, and it was clear that Claus had been suffering for a very long time — this would have been extremely painful. After consulting with the veterinary team, the difficult decision was made to amputate his leg. We know this may sound extreme, but sadly, there was no other option. As you know, Claus already struggled with a high level of anxiety when he arrived, and such a major operation understandably made things harder for him. Friday night was especially tough, and he needed a return trip to the vets on Saturday morning to adjust his medication and ensure he was as comfortable as possible. Thankfully, this has helped significantly, and he is becoming more comfortable and settled each day. Claus is now up and walking and has even enjoyed a short walk in the snow. He is eating and drinking well, enjoying the company of the other dogs in his foster home, and his foster mom hasn’t left his side. Despite everything he has been through, Claus has remained a truly sweet and loving boy who enjoys bum scratches and cuddles. Mr. Claus still has a journey ahead in his recovery, both physically and mentally, but we will do everything we can to help this sweet boy heal.
