Confessions were apparently not the only activities happening after church.
A priest from the United States was reportedly exposed for allegedly using church donations to fund trips to Mexico to visit prostitutes. Emmanuel Shaleta, based in San Diego, allegedly crossed the border to Tijuana, where investigators say he frequently visited the Hong Kong Gentlemen’s Club and paid for the visits with parish funds.
The situation reportedly began to come to light when another church employee noticed unusual patterns in the financial records and questioned where certain donations had been spent.
Authorities later detained the priest at an airport while he was reportedly attempting to leave the country, bringing the allegations into public view.
The case raises broader questions about the level of trust placed in individuals responsible for managing church donations and finances.
