The line rang twice. Three times. Seunghyun picked up. “Hey-” Jiyong braced for anger. He got a sigh. “I can hang up.” Seunghyun could also hang up. The line stayed open but silent. Jiyong let the silence drag out. It had been so long since he’d heard Seunghyun’s breath - so close. If he closed his eyes would he be able to feel it against his neck, his cheek? He looked out the window at the setting sun. “Why did you pick up?” he asked, eventually. “Why did you change your number?” A stupid question. Jiyong had to change his number every time it was leaked - a constant annoyance of his life. Seunghyun knew that. Jiyong didn’t have to explain. Silence stretched again. “Agents and industry people call me, now -” “That’s good!” Jiyong rushed to say, cutting the end of Seunghyun’s words. Too eager. “I’m glad,” he added belatedly. Seunghyun deserved the attention, the call-backs. Seunghyun sighed again. “Look, Ji-” Again, Jiyong’s words were too rushed, almost panicked. *Please*, he could not fuck this up. “I don’t want to fight.”
There was only one fight left open between them. Well, one fight they could actually have. The old fight - he’d lost that one years ago. And the new fight, he was ok, now, he’d accepted their new reality. He’d given in to Seunghyun’s insistence on distance between them. In public, at least. Big Bang could be 3 in name. *But never in my heart.* “No fighting,” Jiyong repeated. “I won’t try to change your mind anymore.” “Then-” Seunghyun’s voice went up in question. His voice was so steady, so calm. “Do you wanna get dinner? With me?” The words slurred out in a rush. “Jiyong-” “I can keep it private! Just you and me-” “-You can’t be seen with me.” *I don’t care.* “I won’t be. Trust me.” Twenty years in, Jiyong knew how to play these games, who to call, what money to send where. “Please.” He was never above begging. Not with Seunghyun. Humiliation wasn’t something he could fathom anymore, when it was between them. “Please,” he whispered again, more to himself than to Seunghyun.
Yes, it is 2025 and apparently I am back to writing #GTop.
