The Andromeda galaxy quenches its satellite galaxies long before they fall in Astronomers know that mergers play a huge role in galaxy growth. Right now, the Milky Way is slowly consuming the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. The evidence is a stream of gas called the Magellanic Stream that's about 600,000 light-years long. The Milky Way (MW) is stripping this gas from the clouds, which don't have enough mass to retain it. They're losing the gravitational tug-of-war with the much more massive MW.

🌌 Our Milky Way is *eating* galaxies! 🌠 The Magellanic Clouds are losing a 600,000 light-year gas stream in a cosmic tug-of-war. #galaxymergers

8/11 Possible explanations include binary black hole "scouring" during galaxy mergers, powerful AGN feedback processes, or remnants of extremely luminous quasars from the early Universe.

Each scenario reveals different aspects of cosmic evolution.

A captivating image of the NGC 7771 galaxy group, located 200 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus. The image showcases NGC 7771, a large edge-on spiral galaxy, alongside NGC 7769, a face-on spiral, and other interacting galaxies. Faint streams of stars and foreground dust clouds from our Milky Way add depth and complexity to this stunning cosmic scene. The galaxies' gravitational interactions hint at future mergers.

A stunning deep-space image of elliptical galaxy NGC 7600, located 160 million light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. The galaxy showcases a remarkable outer halo of nested shells and broad circumgalactic structures, providing compelling evidence for the role of dark matter in galaxy formation through mergers. The image spans about 1/2 degree on the sky.

Finally firing up the 🦋profile! I was warned by a friend that a permanent job dilates time and that "almost done!" paper is going to take a LOT longer! 😅

Well, many years later, that "almost done" is DONE! Please check out my new paper! #galaxymergers #carma #astroph
