PJM Selects 51 Projects to Bolster Electricity Supply
PJM Selects 51 Projects to Bolster Electricity Supply
Around May 15, 2024, PJM, the regional transmission organization responsible for the Mid-Atlantic power grid, announced the selection of 51 generation resource projects aimed at addressing escalating electricity demand. These projects represent a diverse range of energy sources, including coal, natural gas, battery storage, and onshore wind. The initiative underscores PJM’s commitment to ensuring grid reliability and resource adequacy in the face of growing demand.
The selected projects are anticipated to come online in the coming years, with some facilities expected to begin operations as early as 2025-2026. This timeline is particularly significant as PJM prepares to launch a new interconnection process in Spring 2026. The move is part of a wider effort to accelerate the entry of new generation onto the grid, mitigating the potential for shortages.
PJM is currently finalizing significant reforms to its interconnection process, a vital step in streamlining the connection of new power plants and storage facilities to the grid. Alongside this project selection, PJM has implemented several other measures to improve efficiency. These include increased automation and staffing to reduce processing backlogs, optimizing the use of surplus interconnection service, facilitating the transfer of interconnection rights to replace retiring resources, and collaborating with companies like Google and Tapestry to leverage artificial intelligence for more effective planning.
Looking ahead, PJM anticipates processing approximately 62,000 MW of projects throughout 2025 and 2026, paving the way for a more resilient and responsive power grid. The upcoming new interconnection process, starting in Spring 2026, will be instrumental in supporting this expansion and ensuring long-term reliability.
