TBT, I will *not* recommend #ArchLinux, #CachyOS, or #GentooLinux for #Linux newbies.

I will still recommend either #LinuxMint or #KDENeon

Main reason being that (1) I'm well-versed with Ubuntu so I can provide support, and (2) most apps officially come in .deb and/or .rpm

GitHub - X11Libre/ports-gentoo: XLibre overlay for Gentoo Linux XLibre overlay for Gentoo Linux. Contribute to X11Libre/ports-gentoo development by creating an account on GitHub.

#XLibre third-party packages for #GentooLinux are available for ~amd64 and ~arm64 at github.com/X11Libre/por.... Actually they've been since Jun 20, but mostly as live ebuilds. Now they are versioned too. A big thank you to github.com/callmetango and github.com/stefan11111! #Gentoo

I wrote "nearly everything"
because for some particularly painful compilations
you can instead use
a pre-compiled binary package.

The tradeoffs:
- Might not be as optimized as it could be
- Might force you to add some USE flags you don't want

#GentooLinux

Seriously.
If you want a stable OS,
#GentooLinux is it.
The USE flags ensures
that all packages will work together.

Just don't use the ~amd64 keyword.

Of course the tradeoff is
you have to allocate time
to compile (nearly) everything
and to configure the kernel.

Installing some OpenBSD ports. Since not a lot of effort is put into building macppc binary packages, I'm having to build from source.

Reminds me of Gentoo Linux from a couple of decades ago...

One important thing to emphasize
is that USE flags of #GentooLinux really help
in ensuring that packages work well
with other packages.

Remove all unnecessary cruft
and all dependent packages
will just adapt.

Something that other
binary-based distro
might not be able to do.

#GentooLinux empowers you.

You no longer have to subscribe fully
to the opinions of the package maintainer(s).
Add/remove features as you want.

Gentoo Linux keeps your system stable.

USE flags ensure
that packages 'know' how to work with
other packages
or how they *won't* work.

#Gentoo #Linux

And even if a package refuses to compile
#Portage will tell why.

Usually it's because of a missing
or incompatible
USE flag.

You have transparency on what the blocker is
and agency on whether to "fix" the blocker
or find a different package.

The SuperPower of #Gentoo #Linux
is that you can set up your system
exactly the way you want it
via the USE flags.

And packages will -- most of the time --
adjust to your desires.

No such thing as package broken
because of missing dependency feature.

They either compile
or not.

#Gentoo Linux is not that "hard"
at least, not as "hard" as #LinuxFromScratch

Some of the "hard" points, I think, are:
1. Installation
2. Setting up your USE flags
3. Configuring your kernel the first time

Once you've done all that,
maintenance is easy.

Just need TIME.

With surprise,
I noticed that my #Gentoo machine
now pulls in #Zig as a BDEPEND

A bit of diving shows that
#ncdu has been rewritten in Zig.

Nice,
though that means
yet-another-compiler to pull in.

Maybe I should pull in zig-bin instead?

After a grueling 3 days of typing away at my laptop, I installed base #gentoolinux but I gave up installing the DE. I went back to #ArchLinux, but i used openrc. So it wasn't a total loss.
