The Rt Hon Liz Kendall MP Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Caxton House Tothill Street London SW1H 9NA

Dear Secretary of State

Get Britain Working Group: For a new social contract built on employment and opportunity

This Labour Government has begun turning the page on fourteen years of Conservative chaos. The consequences of the previous Government's failures are plain to see. Nowhere is that failure more acutely felt than in the welfare system you inherited when appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions.

Today, Britain faces a crisis of economic inactivity. Almost 3 million people cannot work because of poor health. We are the only country in the G7 where inactivity remains above pre-Covid levels. More than one in eight 16-24-year- olds are not in education, employment, or training. Employment levels among disabled people remain 30% below those without a disability

The economic cost of this is staggering. As you yourself have said, the only way to get Britain growing again is to get Britain working again. But our motivation for tackling this crisis goes far beyond economic necessity. It is a moral duty.
Research clearly shows that many economically inactive people want to work, if given the right support. Yet the current system often acts as a barrier against finding work, making it riskier for people with health conditions to look for work and often failing to offer them the support they need. Rather than empowering individuals, it traps them in precarity. The Conservative ideology underpinning our welfare system for fourteen years was characterised by the sheer scale of human potential it squandered.

That is why we have formed a new grouping of backbench MPs - the Get Britain Working Group - to press for fundamental change to our welfare system to support work

Our Labour values are built on a simple but powerful idea: that every individual, regardless of background or circumstance, should have the support they need to make the most…

Sharing my response to the #GetBritainWorking White Paper that I posted over on Linkedin in a thread.

A cautious welcome:

It positions the high numbers of people not working, or seeking work, for reasons of health and disability (notice I don’t use the term ‘inactive’?) as a key problem >
