The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell

The Shape of Darkness by Laura Purcell

Continuing my gothic (and Laura Purcell) stint, Shape of Darkness is another excellent story from an author who I’m quickly realising has an amazing talent for viscerally descriptive world-building. This story is dual POV. First is Agnes, a woman in her fifties trying to make ends meet after various losses in her family left them without financial support. Second is Pearl, a child under the care of her older sister who insists on utilising (read: exploiting) the young girl’s gifts to make money as a spirit medium to the rich and ignorant.

The protagonists are from starkly different backgrounds but there is overlap in the tragedies we learn they have both encountered—and, indeed, as their stories begin to collide, we realise that the horrifying truth of what’s happening has been far closer to home than expected. For me, at least, the final twists and turns of the tale were completely unexpected and tragic yet, when I reflect on the sad tale, all too inevitable.

Reading wrap from fable for stasiaroze

Reader summary: shadowed sweetheart: your penchant for gothic romances suggests a brooding phase on repeat, yet your heart seeks light even in the darkest tales.

Total books read so far in 2024: 92

I am so determined to hit 100 books by the end of the month that I've decided to make my own reading recap to include everything 😅
It'll be posted on my insta @stasiarozewrites
