Another key point being brought up--guided pathways that are supposed to set up students for easy transfer! How many 4-year institutions are actually on board with how this works? What do we do if we put all this work in as 2-years, and the transfer doesn't work the way we say it will?

Another thing emerging is how much, much more investment in advising and advisors is needed. These are the first contacts students have when navigating guided pathways. When there aren't enough advisors or advisors just don't stay long-term, how are students supposed to navigate?

In Q&A, folks are talking about how funding programs like TRIO and ASAP would also be incredibly useful for students--why not invest more in those?

Finally, Henderson talks about how to streamline guidance counselor caseloads, as students often have trouble advocating for themselves or finding resources on their own. Counselors/advisors, while helpful, often have too many students they need to help, and not enough time.

Hansen found guided pathways were helpful in terms of providing a space for student self-advocacy--they helped her and her advisors navigate courses while still dealing with personal challenges. Her Q: How do we build in/up platforms where students can have that kind of voice/space?

In reviewing the scholarship, Burnham was troubled by how dismissive folks seemed to be about how students might need to prioritize work and, y'know, food and rent. There also seemed to be little acknowledgment of how disabilities might intersect with student-ness.

Three of the students, Laura Burnham, Priscilla Hansen, and Katie Henderson, are here to share their thoughts with the roundtable, which is great. I love the mentorship happening here.

In an AMAZING bit of coordination, Toth was able to offer students a 3-credit seminar for researching/discussing guided pathways, but they didn't have to pay tuition! They were also part of a bridge program between the 2-year college and a university.

In their study, they found guided pathways are a manifestation of movements/attitudes that have plagued two-year college identities for a while. As well, how teacher-scholar activitist stance has "hardened into an ideology," which perhaps needs to be examined more closely.

Next up, Gina Szabady and Casey Reid talk about their article, "Nobody Here But Us Turkeys," and I appreciate the photo of actual turkeys which APPARENTLY wandered onto campus as pandemic closures made spaces more open.

Penner invokes Spiegel's "On Hand to Heart Rhetoric or Why I am Quitting Fight Club" as a great way to reframe pugilistic mindsets.

Penner admits he began the research fairly defiantly, and why he still doesn't like guided pathways, he's admitted there are ways to leverage the rhetoric/structure of pathways to improve material conditions in English departments.

Next up, Donald Penner, who did a critical discourse analysis of program websites, looking at how faculty and faculty's work is represented. Generally, it was all shown as to be transactional, hierarchical in power dynamics, and decentered humans to highlight materials.

Warnke: It seems like the literature surrounding movements like guided pathways is often more about "here's how to implement it" rather than "here's why it's a good idea." They question the actual evidence provided towards its efficacy.
