On the kill floor: How migrants are exploited for profit  - High Country News In 2006, large-scale ICE raids in Greeley, Colorado, and elsewhere, triggered massive changes to the meatpacking workplace that continue reshaping the center of the country.

Chrysalidocarpus lutescens is a fast-growing, clustering palm. It would be great as a source of hearts-of-palm (“palm cabbage”), EXCEPT the growing point (the “heart”) is loaded with cyanogenic glycosides + enzyme. Do not eat it! ☠️ #HCN #Arecaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is cyanogenic, so the tuberous roots must be washed & cooked to remove the glycoside (which is water-soluble). Early agriculturalists selected crops with natural pesticides. 📷: The Ewan CCBYNCSA2 ☠️ #HCN #Euphorbiaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The seeds of Hevea brasiliensis (rubber) are cyanogenic, and the glycoside serves a dual purpose: it protects the seed, and if not needed for defense, the nitrogen in the glycoside is recovered & used for growth. 📷: Ria Tan CCBYNCSA2. ☠️ #HCN #Euphorbiaceae #TropicalBotany #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Piriqueta cistoides subsp. caroliniana has cyanogenic leaves & flowers. The flowers last only 1 day, so putting cyanogenic glycosides in their tissues seems wasteful, especially when N is usually limiting. Even fallen flowers are HCN+. ☠️ #HCN #Passifloraceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

The fruits of Prunus serotina contain a cyanogenic glycoside but lack the β-glucosidase enzyme. Cedar waxwings can feed on the fruits & excrete the glycoside intact. They lack the appropriate enzyme to release the HCN. What happens to the cyanogenic 💩? ☠️ #HCN #Rosaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Popillia japonica (Japanese Beetle) feeds with impunity on Passiflora incarnata. The beetle either lacks a glucosidase digestive enzyme OR sequesters the glycoside to prevent HCN release. Just shows you that no plant defense is perfect! ☠️ #HCN #Passifloraceae #Coleoptera #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Passiflora is cyanogenic, but the Feigl-Anger test detects only those with both cyanogenic glycoside + enzyme. Passiflora suberosa (R) has both (so the test paper turns blue). Passiflora incarnata (L) has the glycoside but lacks the enzyme (paper stays white). ☠️ #HCN #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

You may have heard that apple seeds are poisonous. Yes, they are cyanogenic, but don’t worry. The amount is small, & like most mammals, we can detoxify tiny amounts in our digestive system. HCN is fatal only when the dose overwhelms our ability to detoxify it. ☠️ #HCN #Rosaceae #Malus

When plant tissue is munched, the enzyme &cyanogenic glycoside come together to release the toxin. The Feigl-Anger Test indicates HCN: the white paper turns blue in the presence of HCN gas. This is Nandina domestica leaves at time 0 (left) and 5 min (right). ☠️ #HCN #Berberidaceae

I was a newspaper reporter (eventually editor) for years (and if I got paid every time I mentioned that fact, I wouldn’t have to be anything anymore), and I was taught from the word Go that the lede of one’s story is unexaggeratably vital, and it must stand out amidst the other noise on the page (analog or digital) and ‘grab’ the reader.

The word they used to communicate this idea was nearly always ‘grab,’ or some slight variation on it (and if you’re still here, then at least some part of you had to be wondering why the hell this mouthy trans ginger has a soft spot for Roland Emmerich’s bad films).”

I give my students two pieces of advice about news sources:

1. It's fine to use algorithm-based sources ("push"), but make sure you visit a few sites regularly outside the algorithms.

2. For news (as opposed to opinions), include include some sites that publish corrections. Like #HCN!

Going backwards through my old #Twitter timeline as I'm archiving my old writing, and it's like reading through an old journal I used to keep.
Tony Gaines was my photog, and most of the photos on my #HCN stories are from him.

HCN was a family, & if it hadn't been, we'd have both been fired 😆 #lol
