They weren’t in a hurry—just drifting, occasionally dipping their heads beneath the surface in search of food.</p> <p>Gadwalls aren’t flashy like Wood Ducks or Mallards, but I found their understated elegance fascinating. Up close, the male’s plumage isn’t just grey—it’s a complex pattern of fine barring and scalloping, almost like a woven tapestry. And Gadwalls have a sneaky side too—often stealing food from diving birds like coots instead of doing all the work themselves.</p> <p>I watched them navigate the winter landscape. Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) at Abbott Marshlands Sunday 12 January 2025 I was just about ready to pack up and head home when I noticed a group of Northern Pintails (Anas acuta), along with some Gadwalls and Mallards, gathered on the frozen wetland. Of course, that meant I wasn’t leaving just yet. In the first shot, a male Northern Pintail stands on the ice, his sleek form and striking plumage catching the light. That rich chocolate-brown head, crisp white neck, and sharp black accents make him look almost regal. The frozen marsh, with its scattered reeds poking through the ice, added to the quiet winter stillness.

Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk at Abbott Marshlands <p><strong>Sunday 12 January 2025</strong></p> <p>On a crisp cold morning I returned to exploring the Roebling Park Trail at the Abbott Marshlands in John A. Roebling Memorial Park, Hamilton. The marsh was alive with activity, and I was engrossed in photographing Mallards, Gadwalls, Canada Geese, and American Black Ducks as they paddled through the freezing water. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was seeing among the network of leafless branches against the clear blue sky. The juvenile hawk sat on its perch, preening its feathers and surveying the world below. Its feathers were a mix of soft browns and creamy whites, with streaks that hinted at its youth. The vibrant blue sky served as the backdrop, emphasizing the hawk’s intricate plumage and regal posture. Watching it through the lens, I felt a sense of gratitude for this unexpected sighting.</p> <p>An experienced birder I met as I returned to my car mentioned that adult Red-tailed Hawks are generally more cautious and less tolerant of humans getting too close. Juveniles, on the other hand, tend to be more curious and less wary as they’re still learning about their surroundings and potential threats.
