Closeup view of cloth on a loom. The textile has an underlying green stripe in the linen warp, and is filled with alternating stripes of indigo-dyed wool and natural brown wool. A wooden temple is holding the web open at the fell line, and a bit of the reed and the lay shell are visible at the upper right corner of the image.
Another view of the cloth being woven, showing a plain weave with alternating stripes of blue and brown. This combination – a linen warp and wool weft, is called "linsey-woolsey," which many people have heard of (why, I wonder?), but few have ever seen.
This warp is a test project for a newly-restored early New England hand loom, and the colors are a bit wonky and muddy. I think I'll dye this yardage with indigo after it's off the loom.
Linsey-woolsey.
I get asked about this type of cloth All. The. Time.
It's a linen (or other bast fiber) warp with a wool filling (weft).
