[Blood Moon Teaser]

After weeks of preparation, the evening of the moon viewing had finally arrived. Toshinori was finished setting the table with a variety of traditional Tsukimi foods. Dango, of course, and several dishes featuring eggs to represent the moon. Soba with an egg on top, egg salad sandwiches, and Toshinori’s love of American culture made an appearance in the form of beef sliders with a fried egg. There was also satsumaimo gohan, and loads of seasonal vegetables, served either raw or steamed with rice.

The children had decorated the big picture window in the living room with bundles of pampas grass, and left offerings of sweet potatoes, squash, and chestnuts to the moon. And, given the fact that Toshinori was an orange grower, they had offered a bowl full of mandarin oranges to the harvest moon as well. Not to mention more tsukimi dango. The spherical dumplings were stacked in tidy pyramids on little plates and set in the windowsill among the other items. As the guests arrived, they placed a few harvest offerings of their own. No one in their group was especially spiritual, and Toshinori himself was the only one who even worked in agriculture. But the tradition was fun to observe, especially for the children.

Toshinori wandered down the hall into the living room, eyes scanning the room in search of one person in particular. But amongst the adult party members, the excited children, the festive colors and enticing aromas, and the music of laughter and friendly, laid back conversation, Shouta Aizawa was not to be found.

Stella was chatting with Eri and Izuku, as Dave and Hizashi meddled in Melissa and Shinsou’s game of shoji. Nemuri was in the kitchen, mixing cocktails for the adults, and fruit punch for the children. Toshinori glanced at each of them once, then twice, just to make sure he hadn’t missed the obvious. He’d hardly put it past himself to stare right at someone and not realize they were there. Especially when he was juggling so many things at once.

Toshinori’s nervous hand groped for the back of his neck as he frowned, turning and heading into the kitchen. Nemuri looked up from her work and offered a smile as she pushed up her glasses with the back of her pinky knuckle.

“Thirsty?” she asked with a playful smile as she looked down at her work again. A line of glasses was arranged on the counter, and she was pouring liquid into each one from a shaker.

“Just looking for Shouta,” Toshinori replied with a soft chuckle.
“Ah,” Nemuri said. “That’s a drink you won’t find in this kitchen, I’m afraid.” She winked.

“Any idea on where he wandered off to?”

She shook her head. “I haven’t seen him since I got here, actually.”

“Hm...” Toshinori frowned.

“Something wrong?”

“No, no... I’ll find him,” Toshinori smiled. “He might be upstairs...”

“When you find him, tell him to stop hiding and come gimme a hand,” Nemuri said with a little pout. “Just because he doesn’t work at the bar anymore doesn’t mean he’s off the hook for parties.”

“Sure,” Toshinori replied distractedly, though he did manage to flash a quick smile.

Nemuri’s brows sank skeptically over her eyes.

“You sure everything’s okay?” she asked cautiously.

“Yes, it’s nothing alarming, I just—”

“You seem nervous,” she observed bluntly, setting down the shaker with a soft click.

“Do I?” Toshinori couldn’t stop the brief little cringe that tugged his features downward. He let out a sheepish chuckle.

“Come on, out with it,” Nemuri coaxed, giving him a little poke in the bicep.

Toshinori reached up and rubbed the spot on his arm. “Don’t worry about it,” he said with a little grin. “I’ll send him your way when I find him.”

[Blood Moon Teaser]

When Toshinori checked the date of the eclipse, he groaned with another involuntary eye-roll, its sharpness cushioned by a soft laugh of incredulity. The chances of it were so remote it was almost laughable. For the first time in years, Tsukimi—the moon viewing festival—was in October instead of September. And it happened to fall on the same weekend as the lunar eclipse. A conjunction that hadn’t happened since Toshinori himself was taking his first baby steps more than four decades ago.

And, coincidentally, it was also the day that marked the very unexpected, seemingly random beginning of his most cherished relationship. A year ago, come eclipse day, he’d met Shouta Aizawa. The man who—for better, then worse, then better and better yet again—had completely altered the course of his existence. His best friend. His lover. His entire world.

Of course, he’d had all sorts of ambitions and daydreams about what this anniversary would be like. But all hope of romance was quickly snuffed out by Shinsou’s open excitement for the eclipse. And with all of it converging on the weekend of the festival, Toshinori realized his date with Shouta would simply have to wait.

[...] Toshinori decided to host his own moon viewing party at his country home on the mountain, a little over an hour outside the city. It would be quieter, and the lack of light pollution would make the sight that much more spectacular. He could deactivate his motion sensor lights on the barn, affording them complete and total darkness during the event.

Shouta and his two children would be there, of course, along with the Shield and Yamada families. Mirai Sasaki and his husband, Taishiro, had also been invited. But they were hosting an event of their own on the roof of their night club, so they had politely declined. So the party would remain rather small.

And honestly, after the year they’d had, Toshinori was looking forward to relaxing at home instead of trying to keep track of small children amongst a throng of festival-goers in downtown Musutafu.

[Blood Moon Teaser]
Chapter 1

Though last year’s autumn was shrouded in grief, and bowed beneath the heaviness of uncertainty, it was also unexpectedly full of promise. It began on a Sunday in early October, when an illuminating conversation with a random stranger quickly gave birth to acquaintanceship. Names were exchanged in the morning. Toshinori Yagi and Shouta Aizawa. Coffee was sipped in the afternoon—or tea, in Toshinori’s case—together, on a bench in the park while their children played. And when fate brought them together again and again, the bud of that first chance encounter had bloomed into a cherished friendship.

Barely two weeks into this friendship, however, Toshinori began to pine for something more. And he was fairly certain the feeling was mutual. Soft laughter became warm blushes. The memory of a casual touch lived on for hours and hours on bare skin. Comfortable conversation brought fluttering insides, confusing at first, then unmistakable. Nervous hope, beaten back over and over, but ultimately gaining ground, until every stray thought was of Shouta Aizawa. The one eyed, one legged man he’d met in the park at random. A single father, just like Toshinori himself. More scar tissue than not, and brimming with unspoken pain buried beneath a determination that was both impressive and inspiring.

Toshinori had never been so in love.

That’s when the black abyss of the subsequent winter opened up beneath them and swallowed them whole.

It was spring before they managed to climb back out again. Toshinori Yagi bruised and broken. Shouta Aizawa, just a shadow of his former self. But although the weeks that followed were agonizing, they clawed their way over something like loose sand, then crumbling earth, then stone firm enough to bear their weight. Now, after slowly rising to their feet over the course of the summer, it was autumn once again. They had come full circle on terrain more treacherous than Toshinori had ever imagined possible, and although their wounds had not fully healed, they were living.

Toshinori couldn’t help rolling his eyes and quietly chuckling when he thought about how their journey had, in essence, been a series of extremely unlikely coincidences. Especially when another set of coincidences appeared on his radar, just as summer drew to a close.

It was Shouta’s eleven year old son, Shinsou, who started the ball rolling with talk about the total lunar eclipse that would be happening in the fall. A blood moon. An event so rare that it only happened every few years, and half the time in the dead of night, when everyone would normally be sleeping. But this time, it would hit at a much more favorable eight o’clock, so the kids would be awake to see it.
