This is certainly one of the most distinctive hybrids, heliamphora sarracenoides x minor 'Burgundy Black'. I have three different forms of this cross, but this is one of my favorites. It has a graceful, spiraling nectar spoon that is so just so pleasing to watch unfurl. It is a vigorous grower for me, with a healthy clumping habit. This plant and I have been on quite a journey! Well every plant has a story to tell amirite? Well I received this plant as a propagation, it couldn't have been more then 3" across if that... and there wasn't a whole lot of info out there on how to cultivate it so, I put it in my standard heli mix, let it acclimate over months and was ready to put it in with the rest of my helis. A few weeks go by and it doesn't look happy. I'm talking to the plant... what do you need? Do I need to be more gradual with you? Are you hungry? I gave it some root feeding and moved it in a more shady spot. I start getting some good growth, but a lot of leaf loss (which is to be expected as things senesce) but I knew it wasn't super happy and I kept being patient. At this point I've had it for a year and it still hasn't taken off... I decide to give it a new pot, a 6" mesh pot, with loads of live sphag and I move it to an even shadier spot on the edge of the shelf underneath a massive folliculata. I keep it sitting in water and spraying it occasionally with my special sky juice and mostly intentionally neglect it... and now that little tiny plant is almost 9" wide and tall! One of my dream tepui plants and it's finally starting to bulk up, and honestly is probably ready for another repot soon! I really do believe that most plants that are challenging just require us to be patient, observe, listen and let them mostly be! It's beautiful green-gray striated leaves are as gorgeous as they are dangerous! I can't wait to see what it looks like in another 2 years!

This happens sometimes when plants make new divisions or are freshly acclimating. I've acquired several heterodoxa from various people and they all are stunning green with red edging. Plants go through phases, they change with the seasons and react to our care in various ways... all parts of nature's cadence and our horticultural practices. For over a year I've been waiting for this plant to settle in and show me what's locked inside it's genetic code. For whatever reason, it has been making these 'pinched' pitcher openings and not growing as vigorously as other plants I have in the same species. Well it finally rewarded me with this beautiful jump in growth and freshly opened pitcher. I caught the low Sun behind it near mid day, highlighting the bright red nectaries and red edging at the margins. Of course everyone likes pictures of 'perfect' or at very least unblemished plants. Yet I think it's also important to make space for things that have been a struggle, that don't always look great and then celebrate them when they start to. The longer I am in this hobby, the more I appreciate the power of patience and consistency in care... Finding the rewards in the small victories that make perseverance an attribute I can foster in my daily life. Wonderful display of color today on this Heliamphora pulchella Amuri AW-ISC. People often ask what exactly is an ISC? As I understand it, this plant classification means it is an individual seed culture, which means that it is a plant that is genetically unique and was propagated in vitro (also known as a flask). This may or may not include hormones to stimulate growth. Often times people value these types of plants because they are unique among other specific clones or selections. It has the draw of having a bit of mystery about its attributes, where as clones are selected for various phenotype distinctions. Randomly selected clones (RSC) are plants that have been randomly selected from a pool of clones. They may have a designation (clone # or selection name) or they may be something not yet named. Regardless this is absolutely stunner of a plant and does have some characteristics that are different then my other RSC and named clones.
