Today in #LaborHistory 3/1/1981: #BobbySands, Irish Republican Army, began #hungerstrike at Maze #prison. 10 #IRA members starved to death, incl Sands, who was elected to parliament during the strike. 100,000 attended his funeral.

26-year-old #ProvisionalIRA member #BobbySands began a #HungerStrike on #ThisDayInHistory in 1981, demanding recognition as a #PoliticalPrisoner. Whilst in prison he stood in a by-election, winning a seat in parliament. Britain did not budge & he died on the 66th day, 5 May 1981.
The country house of #DavidLloydGeorge, then Chancellor, was bombed #ThisDayInHistory in 1913. He had promised support for the #suffragettes, but did nothing. #EmmelinePankhurst, leading her #DirectAction campaign, took responsibility, then went on #HungerStrike and was released.

1)if you have limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, u are at severe risk of death
2)if you don’t take fluids u will die within 3-4 days.
