‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’: New Spoilery Image and Quotes From Cast and Crew, Including Sigourney Weaver
More details about _The Mandalorian and Grogu_ are coming out from _Empire_ _Magazine_ ‘s coverage, with some hints about what Grogu gets up to in the film, rare quotes from Sigourney Weaver about her character and why she’s hiring Din Djarin, plus with some interesting tidbits from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni about Rotta The Hutt.
These quotes have yet to be published online and have only surfaced thanks to the Reddit user PureBeskar in r/StarWarsLeaks, who also provided some new images from the magazine — including one that seems incredibly spoilerific and placed below — two of which are below. If you don’t want to be spoiled, then look away now.
**Spoilers ahead…**
One of those images shows Grogu in a birdcage next to one of the Imperial warlords played by Jonny Coyne in _The Mandalorian_ Season 3, who is sat having a conversation with an Iktotchi with a broken horn. It would appear that the Imperial Remnant manages to capture Grogu at some point in the film, separating him from Din Djarin.
It would appear this warlord is working with the galaxy’s criminal underworld. We don’t officially know the name of this Imperial, but Jon Favreau teases in the interview that “You’ll like his character name when you hear it.” Perhaps it belongs to a certain legacy character who longtime _Star Wars_ fans may be familiar with…
Ludwig Göransson, the film’s composer who also worked on _The Mandalorian_ , also teased — without directly confirming — that Grogu will probably be separated from Din at some point during the film:
> “In Season 1, he’s obviously not as much of a presence as he is in the film. Now, he’s got a lot more screentime. He’s a lot more present. He’s not a little kid anymore. He’s more grown-up. He’s more independent. And there is a place to take him, which is one of my favourite parts of the film, where you really get to spend some time with him and get to know him.”
Sigourney Weaver revealed that her character Colonel Ward — whom _Empire_ describes as “no-nonsense” — hired Din Djarin for a very tough job, suggesting that he might be one of the few people who can pull it off. As many have guessed, this is likely what leads him to the snowy planet where that Imperial warlord is located.
> “It’s a big decision for her to rely on [the Mandalorian]. It’s a very hard commission, this first one. Very tricky. That’s why I wanted him.”
It would appear Pedro Pascal was on-set for the majority of filming, as opposed to Season 3 of _The Mandalorian_. According to Favreau’s quote in the picture below, they were able to push Pedro a little harder physically this time.
“Pedro is a pretty physical performer. We pushed a little further than we have in the past.” – Jon Favreau
Of course, Jeremy Allen White has spoken about his role as Rotta The Hutt to _Empire_ already. He concurred with Jon Favreau’s sentiments that he’s trying to step out of his father’s shadow: “Rotta is trying to become his own man and get out of the shadow of the Hutt name.”
_Empire_ reports that it was apparently Jon Favreau’s idea to age up the Hutt formerly known as “Stinky” from _The Clone Wars_ animated movie, as he is “a self-proclaimed Hutt fanatic”. Dave Filoni finds great humor in the fact that Jabba’s baby boy is in the film at all:
> “I never imagined, working at Lucasfilm, that 20 years later I would be working on a [live-action] film that has Rotta in it.”
At one point in the interview, he turns to Favreau and asks: “Did you ever think, watching Empire Strikes Back, we would see a Boba Fett/Yoda team-up? Where Boba Fett is, like, Yoda’s dad?” Favreau responds with a laugh: “No! But here it is, and it turns out it’s a wonderful delight.”
By “Boba Fett”, Filoni is almost certainly referring to the fact that his armor is similar to Din’s, not confirming a literal Boba Fett/Yoda team-up.
The article also reveals that _The Mandalorian and Grogu_ is not using the Volume like the series did. This time, it’s all practical sets, Phil Tippett stop-motion and puppets, and it’s all filmed with IMAX in mind. Hopefully that will reassure anyone worried that this film will just look a bonus episode of _The Mandalorian_ ported to the big screen.
It seems _Empire_ ‘s coverage of this film is set to keep delivering good news.
