This was me.

Hyperlexia: reading advanced texts before understanding spoken language. 5-10% of autistic children experience this.

I was that child, lost in books above my age while conversations felt impossible.

That "different" kid became a writer and advocate ❤️ xx

Let All The Words

Let all the words go
erupting from me,
like a volcano.
Let them fly far
like sea-birds.
Let them pour powerfully
like waterfall,
wetting the pages of my journals.
To rest there a while
until they be wiped out
or torn apart.

3/ If this resonates, I’m writing more about hyperlexia, communication differences, and inclusion over on my s*bstack.
Slow thinking isn’t broken thinking. It’s a different kind of depth.
Thanks for walking with me.

The Myth of Hyperlexia as Instant Genius: Why Fast Reading Isn't Fast Understanding Hyperlexia is often misread as a sign of instant comprehension—but for many, it masks hidden struggles with communication, connection, and workplace survival..

2/ Surface speed ≠ deep understanding.
Hyperlexia can mean reading fast but needing time to fully connect meaning.
In a society built for instant reactions, layered processing gets misread.
We need slower spaces not faster judgments.

Sometimes it’s not a lack of critical thinking. The person is not trying to vex you.

Sometimes it’s a different processing style.
#Hyperlexia isn’t just fast reading it’s layered comprehension that doesn’t fit into rapid-fire spaces. 1/3 🧵

I grew up hyperlexic, which people interpreted as willful, intentional hyperverbosity.

It gave them license to give me a hard time and mock me for being quiet, or so they thought.

My son was reading at 3 years old. Being dyslexic, I thought this was normal for kids. Educators said he was just memorizing books. Turns out it's #hyperlexia. He's almost 11 now, and reads incredibly fast, which bumps up against working memory issues and affects comprehension.

Adventures in momming today:
Pretty sure OG daughter has chronic #Lyme. Daughter the sequel salty for not making the #Starbucks order cut. Child the final chapter read all three books I bought them on Thursday, because #hyperlexia is expensive.
The ferret, though? She’s chillin’.

Awesome symptom no. 7
Interesting reading and writing skills

Some autistics can read very fast, or very early, and/or in quite unusual styles.

For example, mirror writing & reading/writing upside down are skills sometimes seen in autistics.
