Did you know that, starting with AIX 7.3 TL3, you can use nimadm to install AIX updates with minimal downtime?
Of course it's no replacement for AIX Live Update but it is a nice alternative.

My first UNIX workstation as an Assist Professor was a Sun UltraSPARC (1999). Had it on my desk next to my Windows box. I learned UNIX on an IBM RS6000 running AIX as a grad student in the mid-1990s. I had also used Sun for some classes. Much preferred SunOS. #retrocomputing #SunOS #IBMAIX

If I 'grep' for two specific entries in the /var/adm/ras/liveupdate/lvupdlog file, I can calculate the blackout time, after an AIX live update. The example here shows the blackout time was 16 seconds. Cool.

I use the command alog -t mobte -o to view the blackout time after an AIX live update. Today I learnt that "mobte" stands for mobility time estimator.
