In comparison with the calculated global infection fatality rate #IFR for flu (3-7 deaths in 10.000 infections), the #IFR in 🇦🇹 is way off the charts, actually about 30 deaths in 10.000 infections above global levels (corresponding to an 4- to 10-fold increase).

Decades of persistent ignorance and denial
In any case, the figures are hardly encouraging. According to a study, approximately 50 million cases of influenza occur annually within the European Union/European Economic Area, resulting in 15,000 to 70,000 deaths. In Austria, seasonal flu is estimated to cause 350,000 to 400,000 infections and an average of about 1,300 deaths per year (between 360 and 4,000). Flu-related deaths are therefore among the most frequent causes of death in Austria that could be prevented by vaccination.[...]"
Personal commentary:
So, according to the cited study and the media reporting, public health communication has NOT failed, but Austrians are too stubborn and ignorant. And while i do have some concerns about the first part of this assessment, i - as an Austrian - can truly sign the second part.
