哈伯再訪漩渦星系 NGC 4388，星系團介質也能使星系長出小尾巴 * * 哈伯太空望遠鏡近日公布漩渦星系 NGC 4388 新影像，幾乎以正側面對著地球。NGC 4388 位於室女座，距地約 5,900 萬光年，由英國天文學家威廉‧赫歇爾 1784 年 4 月 17 日發現，另名 LEDA 40581 或 IRAS 12232+1256，直徑約 12 萬光年，是室女座星系團最明亮成員之一。室女座星系有明亮活躍核心，歸類為活躍漩渦星系。 團隊指出，因NGC 4388盤面幾乎正側向地球而難辨識精細構造。此次觀測揭示未發現特徵，一道星系核區逸出的氣體流，自盤面向影像右下方流出，形態清晰可辨。團隊進一步研究此氣體流的來源及輻射機制，發現可能與室女座星系團廣闊星系間區域有關。雖然星系間區域看來似乎空無一物，但實際卻充滿稀薄炙熱的電離氣體，即所謂星系團內介質（intracluster medium，ICM）。NGC 4388在星系團內運行時，星系團內介質的炙熱電離氣體剝離NGC 4388盤面冷氣體，往星系運行方向的後方拉出尾跡。物質從星系剝離許多星系團演化過程也可見到，對高速穿越星系團內介質的漩渦星系則更常見。 儘管目前天文學家已較瞭解星系盤面氣體剝離成因，但電離這些氣體來源尚未確定。團隊推測部分能量可能來自星系中心的超大質量黑洞。黑洞周圍吸積盤加熱至極高溫狀態並發射出強烈多波段輻射，可電離靠近星系本體的氣體。至於較遠處呈絲狀分布的氣體結構，電離狀態可能與衝擊波有關。當剝離冷氣體與炙熱星系團內介質以高速相互衝撞，衝擊波會升高氣體的溫度與電離程度，並激發氣體流與絲狀結構發光。 此次哈伯拍攝影像不僅補足NGC 4388細部觀測，也突顯星系團內介質對旋渦星系演化的深刻影響。NGC 4388的氣體尾跡與電離氣體流為研究星系團介質相互作用、氣體剝離機制，以及活躍星系核心輻射對周遭介質的能量挹注提供關鍵線索。 * Hubble Space Telescope Revisits NGC 4388 （本文由 台北天文館 授權轉載；首圖來源：NASA / ESA / Hubble / S.
