The Baltic Sea currently has its lowest average water level since records began 140 years ago: more than 67 centimetres (as of 5 February 2026) below the long-term average water level! According to current IOW calculations, the Baltic Sea is therefore lacking around 275 cubic kilometres of water compared to the long-term average. These are exceptionally good starting conditions for a large inflow of saltwater from the North Sea into the Baltic Sea. (Photo: Ralf Prien / IOW)
