Utah State University’s Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences (ITLS) PhD student Saríah López-Fierro, alongside her advisor, Dr. Ha Nguyen, achieved an outstanding milestone this summer by winning the Naomi Miyake Outstanding Student CSCL Award. This recognition, presented at the International Society for Learning Sciences (ISLS) annual meeting, honors their groundbreaking research on human-AI collaboration in qualitative research.

The award-winning project introduces an innovative approach to comparing human-AI and human-human collaboration in the qualitative coding process. By incorporating Generative AI tools into research workflows, Saríah and Dr. Nguyen explored how these tools contribute to data analysis while maintaining transparency. Their work goes beyond traditional methods, presenting novel visualizations that clearly delineate AI contributions versus human input. This transparency is key in addressing common concerns about the role of AI in academic and professional fields, such as trust, accountability, and ethical usage.

Their research received enthusiastic feedback at the ISLS conference, with attendees praising the project’s relevance and potential to transform qualitative research practices. Many noted the importance of making AI contributions visible, which not only enhances collaboration but also supports researchers in navigating the evolving landscape of AI integration. The project’s success has sparked new opportunities for collaboration with other scholars exploring AI applications in research.

This recognition underscores the importance of fostering interdisciplinary approaches within ITLS at Utah State University. Saríah and Dr. Nguyen’s work highlights how human-AI collaboration can address challenges in qualitative research, offering scalable and innovative solutions for the future.
