PJM Interconnection Accelerates Power Generation Projects Through Reliability Resource Initiative PJM Interconnection, a regional grid operator, has identified 51 power generation projects for expedited connection to the electric grid through its Reliability Resource Initiative (RRI). This program is designed to rapidly increase dependable electricity capacity, proactively mitigating potential shortfalls and strengthening overall grid stability. The selected projects represent a substantial addition to the region’s power generation capabilities. A key element of the RRI is its accelerated deployment timeline; roughly 90% of these projects are anticipated to be operational by the summer of 2024. The projects themselves showcase a variety of generation sources, reflecting a strategy to diversify the region's grid resilience. This contrasts with PJM’s previous interconnection process, which operated on a “first-come, first-served” basis. The RRI prioritizes projects based on their ability to deliver reliable power in the shortest timeframe. Recent regulatory adjustments from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) have facilitated this shift, granting greater flexibility in how generation facilities utilize interconnection services. This includes allowing facilities to operate intermittently, a departure from the traditional requirement for continuous 24/7 operation. PJM is also focused on further simplifying the interconnection process, particularly for replacement resources designed to supersede retiring power plants.
