This is the translation from Icelandic of the link in the posting - unfortunately too long to read it completely here ... The "PDF villain" is preying on publishers and writers
A seasoned manuscript thief is once again sailing under a false flag and trying to obtain manuscripts of unpublished Icelandic books. The publisher says the thief is not causing any real harm, but that it is an inconvenience.

A manhunt for unpublished manuscripts is making a comeback. The thief has been on the prowl for almost a decade now, and it's no coincidence that he's making a comeback at this time of year, when the next Christmas book rush is being put to the finishing touches.

"He's showing off at a time when we're very busy, as we're often sending our manuscripts back and forth, for proofreading or between authors and publishers, or on their way to the printer," says Guðrún Vilmundardóttir, a book publisher at Benedikt Publishing. She has been the victim of the thief in recent days.

"I think it's too dignified a name to call this guy a book thief," says Guðrún. "He knows computers and he has PDF manuscripts from us, so we like to call him the PDF villain."

As if I'm somehow losing or misplacing my authors' manuscripts, he's now writing under this name all over the place and saying that I can't find a certain manuscript right away," says Guðrún. The thief then asks if the author he's writing to can send him the manuscript.

She says it's easy to see through these scams if people are careful. There's always something twisted about the scammer's letters.

Sends authors excerpts from unpublished books
Guðrún says she doesn't know what the thief is up to. "I had promised myself not to spend another minute of my life thinking about this. Of course, you've often wondered about this. People do all sorts of things on computers. He knows how to do this and starts some commotion and maybe t…
