Hearing focuses on Wetland B, buffer reductions and access: designers argue fencing impractical, city proposes restoration and signage Witnesses debated whether fencing or stricter exclusion is practical at Wetland B, with the city’s ecologist and designers arguing the bulkhead removal and targeted buffer plantings will restore functions while full fencing would block shoreline access and is structurally impractical at the waterward edge.

The debate over Wetland B is heating up as experts weigh the ecological benefits of restoration against the challenges of public access—what's the best path forward?

Rep. Kenneth Volkow warns invasive plants are raising wildfire risk, points to drone mapping and targeted treatment State Rep. Kenneth Volkow (D17) told the rural economic development committee that invasive species—particularly buffalo grass and "stinknet"—are transforming the Sonoran Desert into continuous fuel beds, increasing fire risk and insurance impacts; he urged expanded mapping, volunteer removal and pilot drone-based targeted herbicide treatment.

Invasive plants like buffalo grass and "stinknet" are turning the Sonoran Desert into a wildfire tinderbox, raising urgent concerns for local communities and insurance rates.

Today’s photo is an update on that invasive Italian Arum (Arum italicum), now dug up and bagged in the trash! Some of it was growing among day lilies/ditch lilies (Hemerocallis fulva), so there are some of those in there too. (Bonus!)

Missouri committee hears bill to require seed dealers to sign invasive-plant affidavit House Bill 16-24 would extend last year’s affidavit requirement to seed dealers, barring the commercial sale of seeds for six listed invasive plants; conservation groups and livestock advocates voiced support while at least one business owner warned of unintended impacts on medicinal or antiparasitic uses.

Missouri is one step closer to closing the loophole on invasive plant sales as House Bill 16-24 aims to hold seed dealers accountable just like nurseries.
