Thailand Cancels MOU, Probes Worldcoin Iris-Scan Scheme Amid Data, Legal and Money-Laundering Concerns Thai authorities have cancelled a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Singapore-based Prime Opportunity Fund VCC and launched a special investigation into a nationwide iris-scanning scheme linked to the Worldcoin cryptocurrency project, citing legal irregularities, misuse of sensitive personal data and potential threats to national security. At a joint press briefing on January 30, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) said more than 1.2 million people may have had their iris data collected after being induced to participate in exchange for Worldcoin (WLD) tokens, without fully understanding that they were consenting to the collection of highly sensitive biometric information.

Thai authorities have cancelled a government MOU and opened a special investigation into a Worldcoin-linked iris-scanning scheme over concerns about data privacy, legal irregularities and national security.

DSI to Summon Acting Ministers as Iris-Scan and Foreign Fund Investigation Deepens The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will summon acting Agriculture Minister Thammanat Prompao and acting Education Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat next week as witnesses in its investigation into the Worldcoin iris-scan project, which reportedly collected biometric data from around 1.2 million Thai citizens in exchange for digital currency. Both were witnesses to a March 27, 2024, memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and Singapore-based Prime Opportunity Fund VCC for a pilot project to develop the Thailand International Digital Business and Finance Center (TIDC).

DSI will summon acting ministers Thammanat Prompao and Narumon Pinyosinwat over the Worldcoin iris-scan project, which collected data from 1.2 million Thais and involves foreign fund links.

PDPC Orders Suspension and Deletion of 1.2 Million Iris-Scan Records in Crypto Reward Scheme, Sends Case to DSI for Further Investigation Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) has ordered the immediate suspension of a controversial “iris-scan-for-crypto” scheme and instructed the operators to delete the biometric data of 1.2 million people, ruling that the collection process violated the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). The case will now be forwarded to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for further inquiry into possible additional offences.

Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) has ordered the immediate suspension of an iris-scanning-for-crypto scheme and the deletion of 1.2 million biometric records after ruling that the project violated the country’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).
