Discovery of an Isospin-Symmetric Island of Inversion in Molybdenum-84 Physicists have identified a surprising new 'Island of Inversion' in molybdenum-84, challenging long-held assumptions in nuclear physics. Traditionally, these regions, where atomic nuclei adopt highly distorted shapes instead of their usual orderly structure, were observed only in neutron-rich, unstable isotopes far from stability. However, molybdenum-84, with an equal number of protons and neutrons (Z = N = 42), demonstrates dramatic nuclear deformation unlike its close neighbor molybdenum-86. Using advanced rare isotope beams and sensitive gamma-ray detectors, researchers measured the lifetimes of excited nuclear states and found that Mo-84 undergoes large-scale collective particle-hole excitations. These excitations involve nucleons jumping to higher energy orbitals while leaving gaps in lower orbitals, resulting in a strongly deformed nucleus. In contrast, Mo-86 exhibits more modest excitations and remains nearly spherical. The study highlights the importance of three-nucleon interactions in explaining these structural differences. This discovery marks the first known example of an Island of Inversion in a proton-neutron symmetric system and offers new insight into the forces that shape atomic nuclei, opening avenues for further research on nuclear structure in symmetric isotopes.
