A stylized figure of Christ with a red halo bleeds from wounds as large nails pierce its body; blood drops are highlighted in red against a monochrome background.
The gospel of Jesus is not a rational concept to be explained in a theory of salvation, but a story about Godβs presence in Jesusβ solidarity with the oppressed, which led to his death on the cross.

To round out my #BlackHistoryMonth with a spiritual and educational read, I am #NowReading "The Cross and the Lynching Tree" by one of my favorite theologians, #JamesCone. This dude was NO play thing! #BlackBookSky #amreading
Let's Talk About - Dr. James Cone. Cone is considered one of the great scholars on religion and culture; specifically as it relates to Black Theology.

The principalities and powers that are still active in the world, despite God's victory in Jesus resurrection, are represented concretely in the structures of injustice that oppress the weak and humiliate the poor. They are the demonic forces of white racism that enslave black, red, and brown people in the name of freedom and liberty. In this social context, then, God's reconciliation is God's liberating work against these powers. Divine justification is the removal of oppressed black people from the control of white power, thereby making it possible for the enslaved to be free. -James Cone, God of the Oppressed
This #blackhistorymonth I'm focusing on reading and amplifying black voices. The demonic forces of white racism Cone speaks of are screaming as loudly as ever, and we are called to join this work of resistance and liberation. βπ»βπΌβπ½βπΏ

A quote from James Cone, displayed on a dark background with white text. The quote reads: 'Christian theology is a theology of liberation. There can be no Christian theology that is not identified unreservedly with those who are humiliated and abused. In fact, theology ceases to be a theology of the gospel when it fails to arise out of the community of the oppressed.' The author's name, James Cone, is shown at the bottom of the quote.
Quote from James Cone's book 'A Black Theology of Liberation' is displayed against a dark gray background. The quote reads: 'The blackness of Christ clarifies the definition of him as the Incarnate One. In him God becomes oppressed humanity and thus reveals that the achievement of full humanity is consistent with divine being. The human being was not created to be a slave, and the appearance of God in Christ gives us the possibility of freedom.'
"Under these circumstances, doubt is not a denial but an integral part of faith. It keeps faith from being sure of itself. But doubt does not have the final word. The final word is faith giving rise to hope."

"Any message that is not related to the liberation of the poor in a society is not Christ's message. Any theology that is indifferent to the theme of liberation is not Christian theology."
βJames Cone, from the preface to *A Black Theology of Liberation*

Studying the work of #JamesCone in class this week is particularly heavy on the heart.
Rest in peace, Dr. Cone.
