An artwork of four portraits of James McGraw / James Flint, grouped around a book with a red leather cover, supposedly the copy of Marcus Aurelius “Meditations” gifted to James by Thomas. The portraits show him in different phases of his life. In the upper right corner is a younger James, shaven and with this hair in a queue, as he would wear it before his exile. His eyes are cast down and he looks calm but subdued.
In the upper left corner he has a beard, his hair is hanging in his face and he is staring down, looking close to tears.
In the bottom left corner he has his hair pulled back in a half ponytail. He looks down once more, his lips twisted into a snarl, bitter but controlled.
In the bottom right corner his hair is shaven, he looks older and deeply tired, but this Flint is looking up at something out of frame with a hint of hope.
Behind the portraits is a background that looks like the surface of the sea, with faded shapes of ship wrecks underneath. Darkest in the upper right, the water becomes lighter towards the bottom left around the oldest Flint.
Across the art work, written in glowing golden letters are the words “James, my truest love, know no shame”
At some point I will get over this, but not today.
