I really hope this is on the radar of #KitCouncil or I worry that we'll end up where we were last year - THEMUSEUM pleading for funding in order to stay afloat but without any real plan in place to make that happen long-term.

Back to #KitCouncil and Cllr Chapman's motion. Only two other councillors spoke to the issue, Davey and the mayor, who voted against the motion because they didn't think it was needed and that it could slow things down.

Motion text: "WHEREAS Kitchener City Council strives to be accountable and transparent to the needs of the community; WHEREAS the City’s procedural by-law (Chapter 25 of the Municipal Code) deems the minutes to be the formal public record for the meeting; WHEREAS the Council Chamber has been retrofitted with an enhanced audio-visual conferencing system with new features that allow for improved voting processes for members that attend virtually to vote in the same manner as those that are present in the Council Chamber; WHEREAS there would be greater transparency to the meetings and to the minutes if all votes conducted within meetings were recorded through the conferencing system and reflected within the minutes; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Clerk be directed to prepare an amendment to the procedure by-law to require that when an electronic voting system is available every Member of Council or Committee present and participating in a vote on a motion, excluding procedural motions, vote on consent items, and by-laws, shall vote electronically; THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that when an electronic voting system is used for a vote, the results will be displayed and recorded in the minutes of the proceedings; THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that when an electronic voting system is not available every Member of Council or Committee present shall vote by a show of hands."

Text: If you read last week’s Council Round-up you may have noticed that Kitchener Council was scheduled to discuss an engagement process for the Queen Victoria statue in Victoria Park. That meeting happened on Wednesday (you can see the staff report here and watch the meeting here). You can read a Twitter summary of the meeting but council voted in support of an amendment by Councillor Singh to have an artist create an artistic ‘response’ to the statue in the park. They also voted in support of staff’s recommendation to begin an engagement and education process about the statue. Councillor Marsh proposed a ‘contrary’ motion that would have seen the statue removed during the engagement process, but since the main motion passed, her motion was not tabled.
I was recently thinking about this Council meeting and wondering where things were left. Then I learned that the Queen Victoria Statue discussion is coming back to #KitCouncil this Monday (the meeting starts at 7pm). citified.substack.com/p/delegating

Text: This staff report includes a new by-law for Lodging Houses that aims to improve the ability to ensure public safety, consumer protection, and nuisance control while also reducing barriers for property owners. Some of the key changes include more robust licensing requirements, enhanced property maintenance measures, enhanced safety measures by way of mandatory inspections, advertising requirements, the implementation of a Lodging House Handbook and a Dedicated Responsible Person. Based on feedback received, licensing fees have been reduced and the ability to apply online through our public portal will be made available for applicants
