Hussein Haseeb Ahmed sought safety here. Instead, he was held at 'squalid' Manston, where he contracted diphtheria.
He died aged 31.
Hussein is one of far too many who've lost their lives to our hostile asylum system. We have to do better.

If the Government won't record the deaths die in our hostile asylum system, we cannot save future lives.
And it sends the appalling message that the deaths of people seeking sanctuary don't matter.

This week, the House of Lords will debate an amendment from @TheGreenParty (first brought to the Commons by Labour's @NadiaWhittomeMP ) that would ensure the Government has to record every one of these tragedies.
It's time to #KnowTheirNames
Tomorrow @houseoflords.parliament.uk will have the chance to vote on amendment 76 tabled by @greenjennyjones.bsky.social that would require Government to record and report on fatalities in the asylum system so no death is ignored.

On Tuesday @greenjennyjones.bsky.social will be retabling an amendment @nadiawhittomemp.bsky.social laid in the Commons that would require Government to report on deaths at the border and within the asylum system.

The UK Government count applications, decisions, and removals.
But they donβt count the human cost of a system that forces people into danger to seek safety.
A humane asylum system would protect lives, not end them.

At least 133 people died whilst trying to seek safety in the UK last year - the deadliest year on record.
Yet the Government doesnβt officially count these deaths.
Each death is a tragedy. These fatalities must not be ignored.
The law must change so we can #KnowTheirNames.

While headlines focus on how many people claim asylum in the UK, there's one number that's not even officially counted:
The number of people who die while trying to seek sanctuary here.
We know our policies kill people. Their deaths must not be ignored.
