Millennial-to-orbital-scale subsurface ocean warming and Polynya formation off Dronning Maud Land during the last glacial A special feature of the Southern Ocean south of 60°S is the relatively low stability of the thermohaline structure of the upper layer1, which reacts sensitively to even small changes in the climate system with far-reaching consequences for the atmospheric-oceanic gas and heat exchange, the global overturning circulation, the ventilation of the deep ocean, as well as the carbon cycle2,3. Today, the stratification of the upper water column is characterized by the difference in density between the cold and fresh Antarctic Surface Water (ASW) and the underlying warm and salty Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) (Fig. 1a, c, d). The CDW is hereafter referred to as the Warm Deep Water (WDW), a derivative of the CDW that is advected poleward within the eastern limb of the Weddell Gyre4 (Fig. 1a). The ASW/WDW boundary marks the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF)5. In the Weddell Sea off Dronning Maud Land (DML) (Fig. 1c, d), the ASF is located at ~200 m water depth and, in response to increased easterly wind stress, dips to ~700 m at the continental slope, below the shelf edge (~500 m) (Fig. 1c, d). This position protects the adjacent ice shelves (Ekström, Jelbart, Fimbul)6,7,8 from onshore WDW intrusion and accelerated...

Government Land Manager Shares Agency Secrets On the Green Root Podcast, Lyle Lewis, writer and former Endangered Species Branch Chief with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, speaks up for genuine ecological conservation while revealing the best ways for advocates to pressure government land management agencies. Watch the full interview on YouTube. “The people that I have found effective in the environmental community, and there has only been a few, and this may sound weird, were in-your-face assholes. They would come into agencies and make managers uncomfortable. And in doing that, that is the only way I have seen any kind of environmental effects. Agencies will eat up reasonable people. If you go in and you are reasonable, bureaucracies will just eat you up” “Conservation is really about friction, creating as much friction as we possibly can in the face of an ever growing population on the planet.” “And then there is the issue of forest health. Its all just greenwashing because 84% of forest fires are started by people…so the small percentage of forest fires that are actually started by natural causes, we are making them worse by our activities, by thinning forests, by drying them out, by taking out a lot of the large...

When you are in 'the land of the free', Taoiseach, be brave With just a few days to go before the Taoiseach’s St. Patrick’s Day White House visit, and with civilians bearing the brunt of escalating violence in the Middle East, Amnesty International Ireland renewed its call for this opportunity to be seized to stand up for human rights, the rule-based order and humanity. Taoiseach Micheál Martin visits the White House in 4 days’ time to mark St Patrick’s Day, he has a rare chance to show Ireland’s moral leadership by standing firmly for human rights, international justice, and the dignity of all people. Stephen Bowen, Executive Director, Amnesty International Ireland, said: “Never has it been more important that our Taoiseach say what needs to be said in defence of the values we hold dear, and in defence of the principles on which this great nation was founded – human dignity, liberty and equality for all. The roots of Ireland’s championing of human rights lie in its struggle for independence from oppressive colonial rule. This has shaped the people and governments of Ireland, so today our small country wields enormous influence and moral authority. “We of course understand the instinct to observe the usual diplomatic niceties on the day, to leave the...

Reframing Georgia O'Keeffe's legacy and protecting the land she loved ABIQUIU, NM – On a recent afternoon, fluffy clouds drift past the sun, throwing light, then shadow, across distant cliffs layered in yellow, ochre and sienna. This starkly beautiful, high desert of northern New Mexico is where the artist Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted the abstract, color-drenched paintings of flowers, bones and landforms that brought her international acclaim as "the mother of American modernism." In the 40 years since her death, the area came to be called O'Keeffe County. Today, however, that identity is shifting - culturally and legally. There is a move afoot, prompted by Pueblo Indians and Hispanos who've been on the land for centuries, to stop calling it O'Keeffe Country. Moreover, a historic new conservation plan will protect that landscape — with its colorful cliffs and buttes — forevermore. David Evans is the CEO of Ghost Ranch, best known as the home — and inspiration — of O'Keeffe. He stands on a bluff and scans the storied valley. "Georgia O'Keeffe loved (this area) because of the same reasons everyone who visits loves it," he says, "the richness of the colors of the cliffs against the sky, the way the light plays on it, the way the clouds...

Will Canada meet its goal to protect 30% of land and waters by 2030? A new report says Canada is falling behind on its commitment to protect 30 per cent of lands and waters by 2030. That’s true in Manitoba, too, but a vast Indigenous-led conservation area proposed for the province’s north could help. Advocates are urging the federal government to renew conservation funding that is expiring this year, stressing the economic value of natural spaces. We’re trying out staff-written summaries. Did you find this useful? There are just four years left on the clock for Manitoba — and the rest of the country — in the race to conserve 30 per cent of lands and waters by 2030. But halfway through the timeline adopted at the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity in 2022, Canada has made little progress, adding less than one percentage point to its protected land tally and three points to its protected waters. The country needs to double its protected areas to meet its target, known as 30-by-30. But conservation groups, including the Wilderness Committee and the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, warn progress could stall even further as federal funding for conservation initiatives is set to run out at the end of the month — and there’s no indication...

NTT DATA Lands 115 MW in US Data Center Deals as Part of $10B AI Push Global IT services provider NTT DATA has secured nearly 115 MW of new data center capacity commitments from hyperscale and enterprise customers across three US campuses, underscoring rising demand for AI workload infrastructure. The new agreements span facilities in Gainesville, Va., Chicago, and Sacramento, Calif., and include more than 90 MW from a major hyperscale provider, along with nearly 20 MW contracted by three enterprise organizations. The deals arrive as NTT expands its global platform under a multi-year plan to invest more than $10 billion in data center infrastructure by 2027, targeting facilities designed to support high-density compute clusters, AI training and inference workloads, and emerging liquid-cooling deployments. “These new commitments speak to the confidence that clients place in NTT Global Data Centers to support their most ambitious digital initiatives,” said Doug Adams, CEO and president of NTT Global Data Centers, in a statement. “As compute requirements continue to accelerate, organizations are seeking infrastructure that can evolve at the same pace.” Bruno Berti, senior vice president of global product management at NTT Global Data Centers, highlighted growing enterprise demand. “The demand we’re seeing isn’t just hyperscale. Enterprise clients are increasingly pre-leasing multi-megawatt capacity because they recognize the importance of scalable,...

Cultivated Meat Could Land on UK Plates in 2027, Suggests Govt Food Regulator Brits could be eating cultivated meat as soon as next year, with the Food Standards Agency hoping to approve two proteins by early 2027 as it releases an outlook on future food innovations. Cultivated meat has never been closer to British dinner tables. The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has overhauled its regulatory framework for these proteins after years of complaints over its protracted approval process, which was tied to the EU’s novel food system even after Brexit. The regulator is currently evaluating four cultivated meat applications from Aleph Farms, Ivy Farm Technologies, Vital Meat and Gourmey (both owned by Parima), with the latter being the furthest along in the process. According to the Times, the FSA is hoping to complete safety evaluations for cultivated meat by February 2027, which will then be subject to ministerial approval before being put on restaurant menus and supermarket shelves. This would mark the first time these proteins would be sold for human food in the UK. London-based Meatly has already commercialised its cultivated dog food. The FSA’s comments came after it published a report on innovative food technologies most likely to enter the UK market over the next decade. The agency cited climate...

From Varanasi to Kanpur, land is being acquired without consent of people; but raising questions is considered unlawful If the algorithms serve you well, then the reels, videos and news of the recent demolition drive in the Dalmandi area of Varanasi might have reached you already. But like all algorithms, it might have also disappeared by now with newer “trends” or tragedies. Like our fickle attention span, the news cycle also moves on. But it takes generations to build a roof on our heads, and the loss of it tends to stay on much longer in the lives of those affected. The Dalmandi demolition is a result of the attempt to widen the road, which will connect Chowk to Dalmandi. In the form of protest, an owner of a building in Dalmandi set his property on fire when the authorities came to demolish it. These extreme steps are an expression of the helplessness of the victims. These are glimpses of the ongoing injustice by the local authorities, which are not working on the lines of the rule of law. Despite the clear directives from the Allahabad High Court that prohibited demolition or dispossession because the authorities violated the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. This has not been limited to...

Game Species and Red Wolves: A Path to Coexistence on Private Lands In Hyde County, North Carolina, private landowner Jeff Akin is proving that conservation and hunting can go hand in hand. Through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Partners for Fish and Wildlife (PFW) Program, Jeff has embraced habitat management practices that support both game species and the federally endangered red wolf. Improving Habitat for Game Species and Red Wolves By participating in the Prey for the Pack initiative—a habitat improvement initiative led by the PFW Program in collaboration with the North Carolina Wildlife Federation to help recover the federally endangered red wolf—Jeff has enhanced early successional vegetation, boosting food and cover for deer, rabbits, and other small mammals. These improvements benefit hunters and red wolves alike, creating a shared landscape where both can thrive. With support from PFW Program biologist Luke Lolies, Jeff implemented a combination of mulching and prescribed burning across 25 acres to improve early successional vegetation. The mulching removed a dense hardwood midstory that was blocking sunlight from reaching the forest floor, limiting the development of the understory. The prescribed fire then consumed the decomposing mulch and leaf litter, creating the conditions needed for native grasses and forbs to regenerate and thrive. A Model of Private Lands...

Native American tribes in the West are trying - and succeeding - in getting ancestral lands back Native American tribes across the West are trying — and in more and more cases succeeding — in getting ancestral lands back. It’s called the LandBack movement, and Chad Bradley describes it as tribal communities and activists trying to reclaim and reacquire land that was historically and culturally theirs. Bradley is a freelance journalist and former Indigenous affairs fellow at High Country News; he and a colleague recently chronicled this effort. Bradley talked to The Show about what they found, including whether tribes are having more success getting their land back in the past few years than they have in the years prior. Full conversation CHAD BRADLEY: I would say that there's been more progress. Yeah, for sure. Especially with the — I would say that there's more persistence, both on the activist side, so on the lower grassroots community level. But also definitely on the larger federal side, especially for tribal communities and stuff. Who over time have been able to acquire, I guess, more influence and more say-so in their matters. ... I think it has grown. MARK BRODIE: Any sense as why that is or how that's happened? BRADLEY: I think the reason why it just feels...
