LPGA는 이번 제도가 대학 선수의 학업 완주를 독려하는 차원임을 강조했다. 최근 골프 유망주들이 대학을 거치지 않고 바로 프로에 뛰어들거나, 재학 중이더라도 조기에 중퇴하는 사례가 늘면서, ‘성장과정의 균형’이 주요 과제가 되고 있기 때문이다. 또한 LPGA 조사에 따르면, 2부 투어인 엡손 투어에서 최근 4년간 상위 80위 이내 선수의 82%가 대학 재학 경력이 있었으며, 대다수는 약 3.8년 정도 선수생활과 학업을 병행한 것으로 나타났다. 이번 LCAP 제도 도입으로, 대학 무대에서 꾸준히 경쟁력을 입증한 신인 골퍼들에게 안정적인 프로 데뷔 경로가 마련됐다. LPGA는 “선수 개인의 부담 경감과 동시에, 미국 대학 골프가 LPGA에 ‘실력파 신예’를 공급하는 시스템이 한층 강화될 것”이라고 전망했다. 내년부터 본격 적용될 LCAP 제도 도입과 함께, 미국 대학 골프계와 여자체육계 내 신인 육성 시스템 변화가 주목된다. 엡손 투어 입성에 도전할 차세대 스타들의 이어질 성장이 기대된다.
