The #LOCKSS Program is surveying memory institutions to assess #DigitalPreservation practices, capacity, & needs. Results will help identify gaps and opportunities for community-owned preservation infrastructure. Anyone working with born-digital or digitized collections is encouraged to participate.

We partnered with Preserve Together to examine and strengthen key workflows. The thoughtful process made it a genuinely valuable experience. @sharonmcmeekin.bsky.social at Preserve Together shares the journey: www.preservetogether.com/blog/clockss...

digital preservation isn’t really real but #LOCKSS is still an important concept for vegetative propagation of open phenotype plants

Victoria Reich & David Rosenthal reflect on the #LOCKSS Program, including the initial goals, how they evolved, and how the tech developed.
“Over the centuries, libraries developed a dual role... to provide current readers with access to information, and to safeguard future readers' access.”

Everything is up in the air, indeed!
Wikimedia does have data centers in multiple locations outside the US: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_centers
But even then, I guess it won't hurt if people get a current XML dump of their favorite Wikipedia […]
ok real talk researchers, if you are using US govt data in any way, shape, or form .... make sure you have copies of any data you regularly reference in a few places (e.g. Box, Google Drive, personal harddrive, etc) for safekeeping, and maintain versions just for active research use. #LOCKSS
Not hating on the Internet Archives. It's not their fault they weren't conceived to be a "hardened" long-term preservation solution for complete digital systems. #LOCKSS was, & has been for 20+ years. I think the Harvard system I mentioned previously was philosophically meant to be like #LOCKSS.
Reposting this because 1.) redundancy makes for greater #resistance and #persistence 2.) the Internet Archives is not a wholly-safe solution (they got hacked and still don't know what's missing, remember? and these other approaches have not — #LOCKSS has been around for 20+ years and never hacked)
You forget that the WM was recently hacked and still hasn’t been able to say the full extent of damage.
It is a single point of failure… which is why I keep pushing the #LOCKSS approach…
