This image is my poster for the 2026 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference which I am attending virtually because - you can imagine. It has 8 panels containing text and images, comparing high resolution images of various spacecraft landing sites from LRO's camera (LROC-NAC) and the OHRC camera on India's Chandrayaan 2 orbiter. OHRC images have up to 4 times the resolution of typical recent LROC images because LRO is in a higher orbit than wen it started. The OHRC images show some important details impossible to see with LROC. For SLIM, the LEV-1 hopping rover is probably what is seen by OHRC adjacent to the lander. For Chandrayaan 2, which crashed, the largest fragment is seen by LROC to have left a dark track as it rolled or bounced, but OHRC resolves a line of small pits. For Chandrayaan 3 a paper by Iyer et al. last year showed that OHRC before-after differencing revealed small dark spots where the Pragyan rover made a comm turn after every drive. At IM-2 Athena's site unique gouges in the regolith must have been made by the lander footpads as it touched down twice before falling into a crater.

... I show the new thing: the LEV-1 hopping rover for SLIM, rover turning marks at Chandrayaan 3, a row of bounce pits for Chandrayaan 2, the remarkable footpad gouges at IM-2 Athena's site. I point out that the new imaging service from Firefly, Ocula, will […]

Slight change of plan - tomorrow the lunar site selection begins. Today, a preview of my LPSC poster. I compare LROC-NAC and OHRC images of some landing sites - OHRC has 4x the resolution of typical LROC-NAC images at the moment. At first NAC had a resolution of 50 cm/pixel from 50 km but now it […]

Number of abstracts submitted each year to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. (Image by Michael Aye.)

The number of abstracts submitted to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC) this year is down by almost 50% when compared to normal years.

It's hard to say what is the main cause, but big factors are Europeans who don't want to travel to the […]

Open letter - Denouncing LPI's Censorship of LPSC Abstracts

If you are unhappy about the decision by LPI/USRA to censor #LPSC abstracts, please consider signing this open letter:

I’ve attended every #LPSC since 1999. I love this meeting. I’ve defended LPI in recent years because it isn’t easy to move from Texas. This year I just couldn’t. See you all at MetSoc and DPS.

8 0 1 0

We scientists can also stand up for our Constitution by refusing to abide by illegal executive orders. If you are submitting an abstract to #LPSC this year, please be sure to exercise your academic freedom and First Amendment rights. Do not comply.

I've never been, so I thought 2026 may be good to attend #LPSC in Texas.

By restricting academic freedom through abiding an executive order they have effectively lost their prime #Space #science meeting position.

This is not ok, you won't see me or my science there. I hope no one submits.

How do I sign this #LPSC petition?

PETITION: CONDITIONS FOR ATTENDING LPSC 2026

Concerned members of the community have penned and signed an open
letter to USRA/LPI and USRA outlining steps that we feel must be taken
before we will consider attending LPSC 2026. These steps include
restoring all purged abstracts (except those where NASA has
specifically directed or first authors have requested removal), and
committing to preserving academic freedom of speech at the conference.
You can find out more here, and add your name (anonymously if you wish)
at this link:

This petition will be open until the end of July.

Should #LPI and #USRA restore all censored abstracts? Should they commit to preserving scientific freedom of speech at #LPSC? And should they commit to not censoring #LPSC2026 submissions?

If the answer is yes, then sign this petition!

An open letter to the Lunar and Planetary Institute executive office,

I am writing to ask that LPI provide a public statement concerning their ongoing attempt to both censor and rewrite history by removing previously published community meeting abstracts from their archives.

LPI is a trusted organization that plays an integral role in the planetary science community. They organize not only the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, but also a multitude of smaller community meetings and workshops. It thus came as quite a shock to learn that LPI has decided to remove any trace of abstracts that contain certain non-offensive keywords or that are on topics that could be related to the federal executive order attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Considering the 2025 LPSC alone, almost 100 abstracts have been removed from the program, being replaced with the text "item removed". Entire sessions have been deleted from the program, and the PDFs for the removed items are no longer accessible. In total, over 1000 LPI hosted abstracts are no longer accessible from the NASA ADS archive.

it was fully some of my proudest work. we really felt like we were on the cusp of making people listen to this stuff. I had such a great chat with @jakerobins.com at #LPSC on his podcast about it after literally winning a crowdfunded award from his listeners to help cover my travel.

lovely to learn that my abstract from #LPSC 2019 on the diversity of the UK’s student space community has been removed 🙃
Grateful UKSEDS has a copy of the poster still at least

As I start to work on some new planetary science-related research, this definitely makes me unenthusiastic about presenting it at a future #LPSC conference.

Executive Orders are Not Laws.

Example of an abstract that was removed from the 2025 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

In response to the Trump executive orders, the Lunar and Planetary Institute (#LPI) is removing abstracts from previously held meetings that used to be archived on their website.

Here is an example of one that was removed from the 2025 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (#LPSC).

I know such events are happening at numerous ports of entry, but I wonder if it gives #LPSC organizers yet more pause about hosting the conference in Texas when it is hostile in so many ways to scientists.

LPSC 2025 - Lunar and Planetary Science Conference The 56th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (LPSC) will be held at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center</a> in The Woodlands, Texas and virtually on March 10–14, 2025.

So the researcher's *personal* and *professional* equipment was confiscated. They are a 'space researcher,' which means I assume the were going to the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference #LPSC - I wonder if they were a presenter? If so, what was their area of expertise?

Very disappointing #LPSC experience this year. Due to the lack of speaker ready room, slides did not show as they should have, and no opportunity to catch this.
With a registration cost nearing $700, this is not acceptable.
Bring back the speaker ready room.

Interesting new paper from the #LPSC conference! Scientists say that the most likely explanation for the “leopard spots” seen by the Perseverance rover on Mars last year is a biological one. Other explanations still possible but not considered to be as likely. 🤔😮
