"When you live in a political economy that wants you to feel needy and insufficient so you buy things, that spends billions of dollars to convince you of what you don't have, to take stock of what you have inside and around you, the resources that are already with you, is a politically subversive act, and fundamental for healing some of the negative psychological effects of capitalism." — Joanna Macy

A system that thrives on making us feel lacking depends on our hurry.

This points toward a different first step: noticing what’s already here — within us and around us. Not as comfort, but as interruption.

Courage isn’t a solo act.

It grows through relationship — through being accompanied, supported, and seen. Learning to unlearn includes letting go of isolation as a default and allowing shared steadiness to form.

Panic can wake us up — but it can’t carry us very far.

Courage grows more slowly, through steadiness and learning how to stay present without flooding ourselves. Unlearning includes knowing when urgency has done its job.

Many of us live as if the world rests on our shoulders.

The planet is carrying us. Learning to unlearn includes releasing the habit of solitary burden and remembering interdependence.

Modern propaganda doesn’t just mislead — it exhausts.

When attention is constantly pulled apart, critical thinking erodes. Learning to unlearn starts with noticing how fatigue shapes what we accept as true.

Privilege doesn’t just give access — it shapes perception.

When life is buffered, illusion and separation can start to feel like truth. Learning to unlearn begins by noticing where comfort has narrowed our view, and staying present anyway.

Even good ideas can become narcotics when we use them to avoid discomfort.

Learning to unlearn starts here — loosening our grip on certainty so we can listen, adapt, and change how we act together.

Learning to unlearn Business as Usual and the Antidote

Change doesn’t stall because systems are complex.

More often, it’s because we keep carrying old habits — urgency, debate, half-cocked fixes. Learning to unlearn creates space for wiser rhythms to emerge.
