I think it was the 1990 western release of the 1984 #Lensman anime chopped up in several episodes. I knew of #Akira of course but didn't see it yet. I remember Lensman being not very good but back then I embraced every piece of anime I could.

Reading #Lensman is an odd experience.
It is both very dated in how it's written and also literally every major sci-fi franchise in the last 90 years.
Every second chapter has you go "Oh, so that's where X got that idea."
