With his writing and illustrations published in more than 400 issues, Jaffee submitted more work to MAD magazine than any other contributor. And the inside back cover, that folded in to make a secret, editorial cartoon, that was Jaffee’s creation.
The iconic b/w photo of Al Jaffee (left) and Will Elder in the cafeteria of New York City's High School for Music and the Arts, 1936. These two became some of Mad Magazine's most prolific contributors.
An example of the "fold in," created by Al Jaffee. By folding the page(s) in (making the guideline arrows meet), it revealed a completely different - and usually quite snide - bonus comic.
It is the birthday of the cartoonist who created the "fold in." American original Al Jaffee was born on this day in 1921.
