I'll be running a Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack demo table at CanGames 2026 on Victoria Day Weekend in Ottawa this May.

If you're going to be in the area, come give the game of Little Lego Giant Robots a try!

Mobile Frame Zero/Intercept Orbit | Fortified Niche! Have you heard of these peculiar plastic bricks that the Danes have made? They are called “Lego” and you can use them to both erect structures and craft engines, and create whole worlds for miniature plastic figurines to inhabit. And what, pray tell, would happen if such a plastic brick game was inspired by Japanese woodcuts of fights in giant armored suits – or even space-faring vessels? Why, you would get _Mobile Frame Zero_ * and its kin, _Mobile Frame Zero: Intercept Orbit_! _Listen to theFortified Niche episode._ I assure you, don’t mistake the lack of spilled Plate, Round, 1 » 1 (Trans-Red) for lack of violence. As you may have gathered from inexplicable intro, we’re discussing two related Lego-based rulesets: _Mobile Frame Zero_ and _MFZ: Intercept Orbit_. The idea is for you to build either a bunch of Lego mecha – or Lego space ships and accompanying very small Lego mecha – and FIGHT! Actually, the games assume multiplayer by default, so I you can split the brick-purchasing load among several friends. On this table, ships have inertia! Both games have similar basics: scaleable distance measuring units, dice pools, comparing dice results. For your forces, you have a collection of frames/ships and stations. The former are what you control, the latter are objectives to fight over. Players alternate activating their units; once activate, you say what the unit will do, then roll their die. How many and of what dice you’ll roll depends on the unit’s systems. Since you’ll only be using one die result per system, more dice just increase the odds of rolling high. Crab-bot has seen better days. This is where _Mobile Frame Zero_ gets a little funky. You need to compare your attack roll to the enemy defense roll to see if you can (roll to) damage the unit. But a unit that has yet to activate doesn’t have a defense roll yet. So that unit then has to activate, declare attack, and roll defense. After the first unit resolves their turn, the targeted unit will do theirs. And if it chose to target another unit instead of firing back, it can force yet another activation. This can daisy-chain potentially to the entire table. More likely, you’ll use this to make the enemy activate certain units earlier than they would like. Full thrust, aim for the center of the enemy formation, everything will be fine! And once you score any damage, the target’s controlling player gets to pick what system(s) is lost (and, preferably, taken off the model). Generally, it makes sense to lose anything but the attack systems, especially since white system die are generic and can be used for any system. Even a ship or a frame without any systems gets the system dice (until it loses those), so it is still capable of limited action. This is flaming ship is only capable of limited action. Also, it has been boarded and taken over by a mobile frame company. Now, what systems units have is decided in the army building phase. Mechs and ships have four slots, and you can double up on a system for additional benefits. For example, double attack system rolls not just two red d6s, but also a red d8. There are other, non-dice size benefits as well, like double sensors giving you infinite spotting (read: increases hits for the next attack against the spotted unit) range. But even one-system effects are always meaningful. It’s just that in the heat of battle, being able to kill better matters more. Yo, we’re building artillery carriers ovahea. With all the stuff I mentioned before, _Intercept Orbit_ is more complex and interesting. For starters, there are two ship classes: four-system cruisers and three-system-yet-more-maneuverable frigates. The mobile frame companies are a class unto themselves: they have one of each base system, but one company can also be a slightly game-breaking ace. Ships may repair lost systems. Mobile frame companies need to keep track of their fuel, but can also capture ships. Meanwhile, ships themselves have innertia, and their movement dice can be spent for boosting, breaking, and turning. It’s a more interesting game in all ways. Two of my mobile frame companies are trying to retake their own carrier while in the background, the enemy attempts to do the same with his own carrier. In conclusion, _Mobile Frame Zero_ and _Mobile Frame Zero: Intercept Orbit_ are neat little games for Lego-havers. MFZ is a good way to introduce children into miniature wargaming, but is otherwise somewhat basic. _Intercept Orbit_ , however, can stand on its own as a space ship and mecha battle game. Now, if only I had space games to compare it with that weren’t _Battlefleet Gothic_ … _*Technically Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack_

Hold the phone.

I just remembered that I'd planned to use all those tan #LEGO pieces to make a company of desert-themed ST-08 Fat Snakes. (I like it more than the CHUB frame.)

The ones in this photo were built back in 2014. I was building #MF0 frames at a breakneck pace back then...

A trio of ST-07 CHUBs for Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack.

It's been almost seven years since I built frames for #MF0, but my kid busted out the #LEGO over the weekend so I threw these three together.

Dynames update, lots of equipment to cover! In addition to the sniper rifle, this iteration includes GN pistols, though I cheated a bit and gave it the Cherbium's mark II pistols.

Monowhite Jacaranda gets some reactive armor panels, chest shield, and an extended heat rod. Was going for a samurai vibe of sorts, feel like it was a near miss tho.

Grenade launcher, could be more stable but it works for tabletop play. Continuing to explore different color schemes with a limited brick selection, resisting the siren's call of bricklink/pick-a-brick. Please applaud my willpower.

Playing around with a pair of mono color Jacaranda mobile frames. Hard to tell, but both frames are gripping their respective weapons with both hands as a testament to their articulation. Less obvious Gundam influence here aside from the chest vents.

Happy Gundam Day! Some table-scrap weapons intended to look repurposed/slapped together on a shoestring budget.

Bricked up the gundam Wing Zero, upgrading to the Jacaranda mobile frame as a base. Would be a bit of a nightmare to play on the table, but thinking 2x direct attack, def, & move. An argument could be made for 2x SSR to replace the directs, adding spot + def. #mfz #mf0 #lego #afol #moc #mecha

Bricked up one of my all time favs, Gundam G-3 with a beam javelin and gundam hammer. He's just a lil guy.

A new Jacaranda mobile frame bricked up, as well as gear swaps for the demo frame. The lance was inspired by Gundam OO GNX-IIIs. Note the boosters on the second are intended to be drop pods, would make excellent white die system for Mobile Frame Zero: Rapid Attack.

Gundam Exia in fresh brick!

I also bricked up the modern version of the GN pistol and GN blade, but the OG design just looks so much cleaner, especially with the Jacaranda base frame. Now, if Lego could just make a transgreen cupcake....

Tabletop doodling. I've a lack of colors in Jacranda bricks, so testing some more ulitilitarian options. Feel like the arches should have been easier to use in a flightpack, went through a lot of revisions.

Fresh Jacaranda (a more general mobile suit inspired design) frame with gear all thrown together on the fly; rifle, super kama (inspired by gundam hammer), twin grenade launcher, and ultra magnet (inspired by an i-field). Also used some old mobile frame zero stickers! #mfz #mf0 #mecha #moc #afol

Celebrated with updating Voltron.

Protag Gundam lineup for UC from 79 through 96, including Grandpa, MKII, Zeta, ZZ, Nu, & Unicorn. I'm sure I'll get to the back half of the timeline at some point, though pondering if I want to jump to a different continuity for a while as a palate cleanser. #mfz #mf0 #mecha #AFOL #moc #LEGO

Attempted a new Zeta build. Don't really feel it clicking (pun intended). Probably some of that unease is personal bias, but suspect at this scale some of the issues I have with the design are magnified. At least I'm almost done with the mainline UC gundam protags. #mfz #mf0 #lego #AFOL #MOC #mecha

Age-1 Gundam plus Titus and Spallow loadouts. Was going to do a Swordia too, but at this scale there's just not much distinction to it. #mfz #mf0 #lego #AFOL #MOC #MECHA

Test pass of Gundam X with the Jacaranda base, which I haven't done since 2017 with the old Chubdam format. Unfortunately wasn't satisfied with the design, so I think I'll shelf it for now and re-attack later. #mfz #mf0 #mecha #lego #AFOL #moc

First new gundam lego design in forever, tackling the Crossbones. Went through so many variations for the chest skull/beam zanber/buster gun that the final simplistic takes really undersell the amount of effort it took to zero them in. C'est la vie.

Update for the Lego Nu Gundam. Dropped the fin funnel count from 6 to 4 to make it more less busy/more aesthetically pleasing. Managed to fit in the bazooka finally, which doubles as a 3rd point of contact for balance. Tweaks to the rifle & shield to suggest more details. #mfz #mf0 #mecha #moc #AFOL

Finally updated all the RX-78 series Gundams from the One Year War; units 1-6, Casval custom, Alex, Ground, Ez8, and Thunderbolt Full Armor. Getting the chain to lay around unit 1's neck was the biggest pain but worth it. #mfz #mf0 #moc #AFOL #mecha #Lego

Gundam Alex update, simplifying the design to be more inline with the other RX series builds. Tried figure out a shield that would open up for the forearm gatling gun to fire through, but alas its beyond me for now. Finally got around to building a proper rifle as well. #lego #mfz #mf0 #moc #AFOL

Update for the Gundam Dynames to go with the Exia. Got the leg armor to match up better with the source, slight rework for the rifle, and shoulders. Tried out different takes on the full shield/rear thrusters but nothing took. Need more dark green options from Lego! #mfz #mf0 #mech #mecha #afol #moc
