In a recent LinkedIn post, Mittal did not discuss startups or investments. Instead, he wrote about how the US is making life difficult for Indian professionals, especially when it comes to visas and trade deals. He compared it to the UK’s current strong support for India and its respect for Indian businesses. > “After years of colonial hangover, it’s finally India calling the shots. This time, with spreadsheets not swords,” wrote Mittal. “While the UK is rolling out the red carpet, the US seems to be playing hardball.” Before we get into his strong words about the US, here’s a quick look at Anupam Mittal’s journey. He studied in the US and became very successful in the 1990s, working with a tech company called MicroStrategy. At one point, he was worth millions. But then the dot-com crash happened, and Mittal lost almost everything. He came back to India in 2003 with only 30,000 dollars (around ₹25 lakh at that time). Out of that, he spent 25,000 dollars to buy the domain name Shaadi.com. People thought he was crazy, but it worked. Today, Shaadi.com is one of the biggest matchmaking websites in the world. And Mittal is once again one of the most successful businesspeople in India. He is also one of the judges on _Shark Tank India_ , where he invests in new ideas and guides young founders. ### “Why is America making it harder for us?” In his LinkedIn post, Mittal praised the new trade agreement between India and the UK. He said it shows how far India has come. Then he pointed out that the US is not showing the same respect, especially when it comes to: * Visas for Indian professionals * trade talks with India * The overall attitude toward Indian businesses and talent > “Tech? Mostly run by Indians. Wall Street? Filled with Indian-origin fund managers. But visas are still a mess,” he said. > “While India needs a favorable trade deal, it is engaging on its own terms.” His post clearly struck a chord. Many readers agreed that Indians are playing a huge role in the success of American companies, yet still face hurdles when it comes to working or starting up there. ### Tensions rising between India and the US Mittal’s strong words come at a time when relations between India and the US are facing new issues. Just recently: * US President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tax on Indian imports * The US Embassy in India warned visa holders not to overstay, or risk being deported * The US and European Union criticised India for buying oil from Russia, which India strongly defended All of this has led to more tension in India-US ties. Mittal’s post added to the growing feeling that India is being unfairly treated, despite being a key player in global business. ### “Play fair or we’ll take back our Kohinoors” In a powerful closing line, Mittal said: > “India should issue a counter ultimatum – play ball or we bring back our Kohinoors.” The Kohinoor is a famous diamond taken from India during British rule. It is now part of the UK’s crown jewels. Mittal used it as a symbol to say that India is no longer willing to be treated like a second-class partner by powerful nations. Anupam Mittal has always been open about his journey, his wins and his failures. But this post showed another side of him. A successful Indian businessman who is not afraid to speak up for India’s place in the world. > “The risk-taking professionals & founders out there – keep backing yourself. The game isn’t over until you win.” With millions of Indians working in global companies, building startups, and shaping industries, his message is clear.
