He was also the father of painter Rafał Malczewski. Many believe the model for this painting was the artist’s lifelong muse, Maria Bal (Jadwiga Maria Kinga Bal), who was a Polish baroness and frequently his live model for a series of symbolic portrayals of women, as well as nude studies and mythological beings. Their affair began around the time her 1st marriage ended in 1904 until World War I, even though Malczewski was 25 years her senior and married as well. Long after their breakup, the two regularly communicated and remained friends.
