In her Portrait of Père Ubu, Maar created one of Surrealism’s most striking images. Using extreme close-up and dramatic lighting in an otherwise unmanipulated photograph, she made a nightmarish apparition from a baby armadillo. Both horrific and comical, it is a fitting embodiment of Père Ubu, the obese blundering monster Alfred Jarry created in his notorious play Ubu Roi (1896).

Surrealist photographs were also used to reveal the strangeness of the world we think we know, often by simply presenting it in a new way. Dora Maar titled her photograph of a baby armadillo after the anti-hero of Alfred Jarry’s famously transgressive and iconoclastic play Ubu Roi (1896), which was much admired by the Surrealists.

The close-up image of the animal’s unfamiliar form is startling in itself, but by connecting the armadillo to Père Ubu, Maar created an emotional resonance for viewers familiar with the character. Suddenly, the small animal is transformed into a large, greedy, and violent human being — what was perhaps merely strange becomes monstrous. This is possible in part because of the way the photograph distorts our sense of scale by close-cropping and isolating the animal within the frame.

Henri Laurens, who associated closely with the avant-garde painters of his native Paris, worked in a Cubist idiom from 1915. In about 1920 he turned from the production of bas-reliefs and frontalized constructions to the execution of more classically ordered, freestanding sculptures. Head of a Young Girl may have appeared originally as a drawing. However, in this bust Laurens expresses Cubist painting principles in essentially sculptural terms. The tilted surfaces and geometric volumes of the sculpture interpenetrate to constitute a compact whole. Circling the piece, the viewer perceives dramatically different aspects of the head, which provide a variety of visual experiences unexpected in a form so schematically reduced.
The structuring planes of one side of the head are broad and unadorned; its edges and planar junctures form strong, uninterrupted curves and straight lines. The other side is articulated with detail; its jagged, hewn contour describing hair contrasts rhythmically with the sweeping curve of the opposite cheek. Laurens slices into the polyhedron that determines the facial planes to describe nose, upper lip, and chin at one stroke. The subtle modeling, particularly of the almond eye and simplified mouth, produces nuanced relations of light and shadow. Despite the geometric clarity of structure, the delicacy of the young girl’s features and her self-contained pose create a gentle, meditative quality.

A book entitled "Mable Dwight: A Catalog Raisonne of the Lithographs", by Susan Barnes Robinson and John Prior. The cover shows one of the artist's lithographs - a black & white interior of a movie theatre, looking over the heads of an audience toward the screen. A man carrying a large coat is attempting to reach his seat among the seated audience while the film is in progress. On the movie screen, a romantic moment is in happening between an actor and an actress; they are engaged in a kiss.

The design employs his 'onix negro' and 'mosaico azteca' inlay techniques to form two opposing 'hands'.
One hand is primarily black onyx with a circle of azurmalachite inlay in the palm, and the other hand is the reverse primarily azurmalachite with a circle of onyx in the palm.
The size, the brilliant color, the striking surrealist hand design, the rarity of this design. It's a masterpiece from his final few years!
Materials: bronze, onyx, azurmalachite mosaic inlay
The only example of this design that I have seen.
Chato was greatly influenced by the modern art movements of his time including cubism and surrealism, and this design shows his fascination with the human hand.
Marked "Los Castillo Taxco" and design number "11" at back.

It’s really lovely to see erasure poetry used as a way of returning to Mrs Dalloway. Such a creative way of reading, letting Woolf’s words and rhythms surface in new and unexpected ways.

Hans Hofmann was an American-German Abstract Expressionist painter regarded as one of the most influential art teachers of the 20th century. In works such as The Golden Wall (1961), Hofmann disbelieve his belief in the emotional potential of color. “Color is a plastic means of creating intervals—color harmonics produced by special relationships, or tensions,” he once remarked. Born on March 21, 1880 in Weissenberg, Germany, his family moved to Munich, where as a precocious teenager Hofmann produced scientific inventions, including a radar device. Working for the Bavarian government as young man, he moved to Paris in 1904 to pursue a career in art. In 1915, he opened his own art school in Munich, which operated until 1930, when he was invited to teach in the United States. While in New York, he served as a mentor to Helen Frankenthaler, Ray Eames, and Lee Krasner, as well as becoming close friend of Jackson Pollock. In 1960, Hofmann’s work was featured in the Venice Biennale, and three years later, The Museum of Modern Art mounted the landmark exhibition “Hans Hofmann and His Students.” The artist died on February 17, 1966 in New York, NY. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Tate Gallery in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., among others.

An abstract vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel modernist platter/artwork by enamelist/metalsmith Jules Perrier of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Perrier started making jewelry and enamel art in the mid 1950s, and his enamel artwork in particular are very distinctive and striking visually! An incredible abstract modernist design in such vivid colors and amazingly it is in near flawless condition especially given its age! The darker colored abstract design is raised slightly above the vivid orange background which adds texture to this outstanding design! Measures 9" diameter by about 1-1/8" high at the rim. Marked at back as shown, "Jules Perrier Quebec". As noted above this artwork is in excellent vintage condition.

A vivid vintage 1960s 70s handmade copper enamel abstract modernist artwork by Pierrette Leclair of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Small, but mighty design in bold colors that catch the eye, and the irregular shape adds to the charm in my opinion! The enamel is thick in some areas similar to impasto painting! Pierrette Leclair was born in Montreal and studied classical music in her youth, but gave it up when she discovered artistic enameling in 1953. Self-taught, she later added some courses with specific artists to increase her skills in enameling. She participated in many exhibitions, and won many prizes over the course of her long career. Her work has been gifted to many world leaders and celebrities by the city of Montreal, and the province of Quebec as well including the Queen Mother of the UK, and the wife of Charles de Gaulle, and the first three astronauts to land on the moon! This is an exceptional example of her artistic work, and in such great shape! Measures just under 5-7/8" by 5-5/8" by just under 1" high at rim. Signed at back as shown, "Pierrette Leclair fait main Que.". Excellent vintage condition.
